Tyson Fury On His Father John Fury: ‘He’s A Promoter’s Dream’

The ‘Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) is all set for his Saturday showdown against the unified heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs). But there is no denying that nobody has hyped up the fight like his father, John Fury. The older Fury’s antics ahead of the fight have been nothing short of legendary, including the infamous headbutt of a member of Usyk’s team. On the other hand, the younger Fury has been largely unapologetic of his father’s actions, even going as far as calling him a “promoter’s dream.”

Fury was a guest on the latest episode of The MMA Hour hosted by Ariel Helwani. In conversation, he got candid about thoroughly enjoying his father’s behavior, leading to the fight.

“My dad is my Angelo Dundee. He’s my salesman. He just adds so much hype and so many views to anything we do. So, fantastic. That little ruckus he did probably added half a million pay-per-view buys. Crazy,” he said. “The world was talking about it, even more so than the actual event. It just brings eyes from all over the planet to this event, to Saudi Arabia, so it was fantastic. He’s a promoter’s dream.”

Fury further mentioned that his father was not seriously injured after the headbutt. But it certainly helped create a larger buzz for the fight.

“I Don’t Need Anybody To Tell Me Good or Bad”

In the same episode, Fury revealed that he is never interested in talking about past fights, regardless of the context. “I’m not one of these people who blames an elbow or a trainer or a piano lesson. I’m not interested. It’s in the past,” he said. Fury added that he believes in learning from every experience; if he doesn’t learn anything from an experience, then it wasn’t worth having.

“I’m a realist myself, so I don’t need anybody to tell me good or bad. I’m not someone who needs a pat on the back or anything like that. I’m just an original OG, I know if I’ve done good or done bad. Negative or positive comments don’t affect me because they’re just someone’s opinion,” he said.
