Ahhh, the age old question. From an idealistic point of view athletes are in general not role models by virtue of being famous. HOWEVER, athletes are in fact magnets for adoration and idolatry. An athlete should do whatever he or she wants, just like the rest of us; but, that athlete must also be prepared to face the fickle public, and the unpredictable press. I am pretty sure a pro athlete is no less educated than the general population (which is itself undereducated) and I am certain they are no more or less drunk and stoned. They are overpaid, true, but that is a product of capitalism.
In short, it seems that if parents do right by their children they will be the object of worship and athletes will be what they should be: objects of curiosity and spectacle.

Always comes down to the parents.
