Vikings Draft A Nobody With Potential Stars Left On The Board

If it makes you feel any better, I spoke with a scout who on the condition of anonymity told me that this dude has the potential to tear it up in the league. He absolutely loved the guy. And, no, it wasn't a scout for the Vikings.

Although the Vikes don't need another safety, this guy is one of those players that could make a team very happy. I live in TX and have seen more press on this guy than most people up north. Don't know much about Sharper's and Williams' contracts, but maybe they are getting some insurance at that position or they could use him as trade bait. You would know more about that than me, of course. Just throwing stuff out there to think about.

I think its a good pick as his stock is on the rise and the report is pretty good.
Johnson is a bit of a 'tweener, as he lacks the bulk and size you look for in a strong safety and does not show the man coverage skills to play free safety. He is a good fit for a Cover-2 scheme, as he is more comfortable playing downhill than when parked in the deep third of the zone. He is a superb pass thief and plays with reckless abandon, especially on special teams. He does bite a lot on activity in the backfield and is slow to see the play develop, but does close with good urgency when he locates the ball. The fact that it's our deepest position is my biggest issue. We just brought in two guys this offseason. Sharper may be getting older but he is still the best there is. I just think they could have done a better job with the pick. If he turns around and lights up the league, I'll take back what I said.

Johnson will be able to contribute right off the bat. The Vikings are horrendous open field tacklers, and this guy will bring the thunder. Plus, being a stud at safety, he'll benefit so much playing with Sharper, one of the elite football minds.

I was surprise they didn't take Brohm, and it does prove still that Childress doesn't know what the hell is going on. But, this'll do. Johnson isn't the sexy pick, but he's good.

our Pass D is horrible...I'll talk any Safety or CB that we can get....we need something. Bzr, who should we have drafted then?

I would have loved Brohm or Fred Davis. Our pass defense was horrible last year, but I think we had already addressed that enough through free agency.

John David Booty is a decent pick. Jackson needs some competition and now he will get some.

I know we need TE, OL...but we can get them in later rounds...

Mel Kiper had him rated as his #1-#2 Safety. Just because he isn't a skill player (QB, RB, WR) and people think he's a nobody. Is Darrin Sharper a nobody?

Tyrell was a solid pick, they got their 'backup' qb in Booty, they got a replacement DT for P.Williams in Guion....we do need some OL help!!

This was a great pick by the Vikings especially considering the fact that they got Booty in the 5th round. Booty should be a great game manager for the Vikings as he doesn't make many costly mistakes.

i don't think it was a bad pick at all - especially in retrospect. darren sharper isn't going to play at an elite level forever...

I don't know how many have read my most recent post, but I HAVE changed my tune a little. With the draft of Booty, I am less upset. And if Johnson is as explosive as you all say, I will take back all negative comments I've made towards him. I'm really excited for the season now, as I'm sure everyone else is.

i think he is a good player, and darren sharper is getting up there in age, don't judge drafts until they have a couple of years to play out, or else you sound like an idiot(i.e Mel Kiper), btw i'm not calling you an idiot, because i was mad when the eagles traded out of the first round, and that looks like it may work out pretty well for them

Eagles will have two first rounders next year just like the Cowboys did this year. That will make a big difference.
