Antonio Brown's latest football venture comes to abrupt, dramatic close

"After exhausting all avenues, the NAL board of owners have decided unanimously to terminate the membership agreement of the Albany Empire," an article from the National Arena League (NAL) website said.

According to the NAL, the league will adjust the rest of the regular-season schedule and announce an updated one in the "near future."

The Albany Empire (who've won the last two NAL titles) had the worst record in the seven-team league through seven contests with a mark of 1-6. The Empire lost each of their last six games, had the lowest number of points this year (295) and surrendered the second-most points (381).

Albany was only halfway through its 14-game schedule and slated to face the Jacksonville Sharks on Saturday at home.

Brown's scandal-filled final years in the NFL carried over into his involvement in the NAL, essentially from the start.

In mid-April, Brown was involved in an altercation with security during his first game as the apparent co-owner of the Empire. The seven-time Pro Bowler originally said that he was a co-owner of the franchise, before later claiming he has no control over the team.

It's recently been reported that Antonio El-Allah Express Trust Enterprise holds a 95 percent ownership interest, with Charlotte and Steve von Schiller controlling the other 5 percent.

Following Albany's loss to the Carolina Cobras in late-April, head coach Damon Ware left the team. Ware's departure reportedly stemmed from a lack of payment to the staff and roster, as well as an incident on Albany's bus returning from North Carolina, which resulted in multiple players receiving suspensions.

Brown said in late-May that he planned to play in his first football game in over 16 months when the Empire hosted the Fayetteville Mustangs, but that never happened. He didn't suit up in Albany's apparent final game of the season either.

Football fans likely haven't heard the last from "AB."
