Bryon Friedman and Ann West won downhill races on Thursday at the FIS Spring Series at Mammoth Mountain. The races were run on a shortened course and consisted of two runs due to high winds. Friedman, looking to secure a spot on the U.S. Ski Team next season as he continues to battle back from a serious leg injury suffered in 2005, won in a combined time of 1 minute, 51.66 seconds on a relatively flat track. U.S. B teamer Will Brandenburg, known more for his exploits in slalom than on the speed track, was second in 1:52.19. Squaw Valley’s Greg Bartels (1:52.64), Sam Sweetser (1:52.80) and Canada’s Louis-Pierre Helie (1:52.81) completed the top five. West, of Boulder, Colo., topped the women’s race by more than half a second over J2 racer Delainey Ackerman of Ski Club Vail. West clocked 1:58.02 to 1:58.57 for Ackerman. Canada’s Ashley-Kate Durham finished third in 1:59.34. Erika Ghent of Ski Club Vail and Team Savage’s Kayla Fry were fourth and fifth respectively. Another pair of downhills were scheduled for Thursday to close out the series.
