SI takes a shot at Philly: "100 seasons. . . 100 heartbreaks"

I have no love for Philly and the behavior of its fans who sometimes take their passion for their teams too far, but I have to say that SI takes a cheap shot at Philly in this article. Writes Philly native Bryan Armen Graham:

"They say history is written by the winners but as the Penguins dispensed of the Flyers on Sunday afternoon -- capping yet another season without a championship in Philadelphia -- the losers made a little history of their own. The Flyers' elimination made it 100 consecutive seasons without a title for Philadelphia's four major teams. That's far and away the record for a four-sport town -- a gold standard for civic sports futility."

How does he get 100 seasons since it the 83 Sixers won the NBA title? He counts the 25 seasons of the four major sports teams since the 1983 title, 25 seasons times 4sports = 100 seasons. Just for an extra insult to Philly, Shawn Bradley is the athlete pictured in the story. Come on, that's cheap.

i saw this yesterday on my feed.......maybe he was stoned when he wrote this LOL!!!!

98 to be exact lol

LOL!!!!!!!!!

UGH.... That face says it all.... Ugh

I couldn't get the caption under the Shawn Bradley picture that SI had so here it is:
"The 76ers inked rookie Shawn Bradley to a $44 million deal, making him the highest-paid athlete in Philly sports history at the time."

you aren't the only one cowboy!!

we had a great laugh at work last night with that SI article. and its not like i live in a city that hates philly teams, i live in philly, work a sports wire service, and those guys live and die with philly sports, and they were laughing and it had a great debate on where things should of been on the list.

AMEN!!

There is a lot to say about passion buddy. You talk about taking it too far...I am suprised that you did not talk about us throwing snowballs at Santa decades ago.

I figured the article took enough shots at Philly sports that were a little undeserved. Philly isn't the only 4 sport town whose teams have been bad. What about the Bay area? Phoenix? Seattle? Washington DC? Atlanta? Philly may have struggled longer, but some of the teams in those other cites have been worse. I'd also rather talk sports with Philly fans than fans from those other cities.

Cowboy Joe, "What are the four teams from the Bay area?Phoenix? Seattle? Washington DC?" I know Seattle never had a hockey team. Phoenix doesn't have a baseball team.

The D-backs are your Phoenix baseball team and since Vancouver is close to Seattle they could be considered the hockey team for Seattle. The point was several other cities have also had sports futility not just Philly.

Yes Some Phiily fans do take it to far just like fans all over.
I would say 70% of people who go to eagles games are good fans. That leaves 30% MEATBALLS! That can be bad at times. By the way i am an eagles season ticket holder.

Yea that is true one bad action covers up 100 good ones... for instance one philly fan assults a fan we all get a bad name... lol

reds & birdsrule, very true, and the media takes it & runs with it, ah well , it is what it is right ;0 !!!

"the city's historical inferiority complex". by historical does this guy mean how it used to be the capital of america. surly being the capital is something inferior (sarcasm). historically speaking, philly is a superior city with a superior history.

the media loves to write philly off and help perpetuate the nega-delphia vibe. it gives them something to talk about. just like espn snubbed bledsoe through his career in order to cover the more unpredictable farve, the same happens with philly, cover the negative, negative, negative. you end up with articles like this.

in true philly fashion, why don't we round up 50 guys and give Bryan Armen Graham 100 middle fingers as our reason to stay true to our city.

KLASSIC!!!!!!!!

let s have him come to one of my tailgate parties at the linc and me and my crew can beat his ass!!!!
then we'll drop him off in the neighborhood bar with a " I LOVE T.O." shirt on!!!!
it's just a lil brotherly love!!!!

Good stuff!!!

sad to see a dried up sportswriter trying to sell a crappy magazine by taking shots at real fans.
does this jerk realize how easy it is to be a fan of Dallas, San Fran, Pitt, NE, when you can reflect on "dynasty years" if you're having a bad year....we Philly fans love our teams win or lose, thats the definition of a real fan, kudos to us for sticking by through the thick and thin. what a jerk.

Try being a fan of a team that went 1-15 and 3-13 before they won Super Bowls. I have been a Cowboy fan for probably long than you have been on this earth and I have been through the "not so easy" and the "easy". And, I didn't give up on MY team when the going got tough. You think Philly fans are the only fans that stand behind their teams during bad times? Has S.F., Pitt, N.E. always been winners? I don't think so, and they have many loyal fans that went to the games when they were losing. So, no, it's not easy being a fan of any of those teams if the fan is a true fan.

The difference is Philly hasn't had dynasty years to reflect back on when times are tough.

Well, it's also like Philly hasn't had some good years. That's what I'm getting at. They just went 4 NFC Championships and 1 Super Bowl. They have also had other good years. Maybe not a dynasty, but they haven't been exactly stinking it up the last 25 years. How many 1-15 and 3-13 seasons have they had in the last 25-30 years? Experience a few of those as a fan and you'll know what I mean.

no 1 or 2 win seasons but plenty of tough years.... trying watching the rest of the NFC East win 5 of 6 SBs and not getting one of your own...
we have one of the largest if not the largest fan bases and haven't won a championship since 1960. It would be all to easy to jump ship to a New York or Jersey team, and the other PA team, but we stick by our mean green machine.
u've won 5 championships since last time we won any.... yeah thats real hard to swallow on the down years, I really feel bad for ya

oh I'm sorry....didnt know this was a cowboy blog, cuz i read Philly in the title and everything I read was about Philadelphia...
also don't recall saying U werent a true fan of your team( I'm sure u will admit there are plenty of bandwagons of dynasties)
furthermore, not my fault you are old....but doubt u've been a fan longer than Ive been alive.... considering your team has only been around 48 yrs or so we were winning championships before you had a team buddy. stick that in ur pipe and smoke it
E-A-G-L-E-S
EAGLES!

I never said there weren't any bandwagon fans. I'm just saying that not every fan of a winning team now is a bandwagon fan. And , I'll forgive you for the "old" comment, you young 'wet behind the ears know it all". Not sure why you are going off on me for speaking the truth, but that's just too bad. So, stick that in your pipe and smoke it. I wouldn't give a flying **** if we didn't win one Super Bowl, I'm still a fan and that's all that counts.

Oh, and another thing. I'll go on any blog I want and comment. I didn't come on here bashing anyone in particular, but it looks like you're up to the task, so there ya go.

wet behind the ears? u haven't ne clue how old i am.

did you even read the article before commenting, or r u the type that just has to comment on anything and try to wedge into the conversation to make it about you?
heres the news.... every team that ever went to a SB or deep in the playoffs, or had a series of winning years has bandwagons. the difference is, when a team brings in a few rounds of rings it is easier to remain a fan whenever that team is no longer winning for a few seasons.
It does not become easier when your team goes 48 years without a title.... or the combination of your city's 4 teams goes 25 years without winning any titles. It is so easy for young kids to become Broncos fans from Florida because they grew up watching Elway win 2 in a row, or NE fans from Arizona because Tom Brady is made to look legendary by media. For us there is no media making our team look better than we are, now back to back championships to attract the young "wet behind the ears" fans that have not chosen a team yet. there are years or agonizing disappointment's yet we still remain fans with very little to savor and we have a continously growing fans base larger than even your fiverings can bring. larger than that of San Fran, Pittsburgh, or NE. yet with none of the success..... and do you know why that is? because we have faith in our team and hope for it's future, not needing to dwell on the past, were moving forward, we are looking past you.
90% of eagles fans know our fight song.... do you know yours?
Fight Eagles, Fight
ps. I don't need to be 60 years old to be a fan of my team and know it's history.

todays lesson brought to you by the color Green

You're talking to a 20 year season ticket holder who knows just as much about this stuff , if not more, than you do. As you Eagle fans say, you guys haven't won a playoff game in 12 years. Know what? It hasn't kept me from going to the games through all of those butt whippiings and 5-11 seasons. I don't know about the largest fan base. I am just trying tell you what I see here. Sure, there are bandwagon fans everywhere. All you have to do is see the inside of my house and the tags on my truck to know I'm no bandwagon fan. Sure, there are millions of them out there. I'm sure the Eagles had a few when they were going to the NFC Championships and Super Bowl. That's just the way it is. Maybe you need to travel the country some and see some of those fan bases yourself before you comment. Anyway, thanks for the so-called lesson. Wasn't anything new to me, but thanks for trying. Have a good one.

I love your assumptions....my age.... my traveling experience. Ive been to 26 NFL stadium for Eagles games....I know the fan bases quite well thank you, And it took a lot less than 20yrs for me to realize what we have here as fans is special.
for some reason you in all your wisdom can not understand the point Ive clearly made. this conversation is not about YOU, its about US chief. You can be the biggest most loyal Cowboys fan ever..... but that means nothing to me at all..... show me a lifelong Lions or Cardinals fan, I can respect a fan that has stuck by either of those losers.
The point being.... once again, that it is easier to be a fan of a team that wins often or has a history of winning than it is to be a fan of a team that hasnt won in a few decades.
boohoo you went 10+ years without a playoff win, u've won 3 SBs in the last 16 years.

Is it easier to be a Patriots fan now....or a Bills fan?..... this is my point if u can not see it I dont know what to do for you. I respect the Bills fans for sticking by their team through the hardships

I'll be damned if I have to listen to a person named fiverings complain that his team doesn't win enough..... greedy SOB

todays lesson brought to you by the number 1960 (the last championship season we've celebrated)

Oh, and about winning enough? I guess you DO get used to it, huh? I like the experience. Let me know how it feels when you win a SB. Have a good holiday weekend.

wow, I just didn't think U would ever shut ur mouth..... Thank You, Thank You so much....
Let me know how it feels when you have a loyal fan base. rock on

End of conversation. Just enjoy being a stinking Eagles fan, OK. I'll be damned if I am going to listen to a guy named Squish telling me how to be a fan. Enjoy your 1960 Championship. Thanks.

Great Post! I can't imagine going that long without a championship. Lol. Look at the brightside. Nobody makes a better cheesesteak.

Subway does.
