growing up too fast? thoughts

reading this over my morning coffee found it pretty interesting, same age as my son, my son plays basketball too but i don't know that i'd allow this, got any thoughts?

Kentucky men's coach Billy Gillispie offered a scholarship to an eighth-grader last week and a ninth-grader on Monday, but Gillispie, who is trying to restore a storied program's luster, says there is no need for concern.

"I don't think it will become commonplace for eighth-graders to commit to schools, but I think there are certain exceptions," Gillispie says. "There are certain players, certain students, certain musicians where they know what they want at a very early age. But I understand there are people who see negatives as well."

"I find the practice appalling, quite frankly," said Brit Kirwan, chancellor of the University of Maryland system and co-chair of the Knight Commission, which urges reform in college athletics. "I certainly hope the NCAA will step in and put a stop to it. I certainly will voice my objection to (NCAA President) Myles Brand and others at the NCAA."

as the mom, to our son, NO WAY!!!!!!! school 1st!!!!!!! why make a child worry about something like this, when there's enough for them to worry about with just school!!!
WOW that is something, i am pretty much surprised by this!!!

no kidding, it is rediculous to have the kid being involved in that stuff. Let him have a life!

amen chicka, our kids have enough stress, i wonder what the hell is running through this kids parents minds?

greed. $$

that's a shame :( !!!!

some of the parents agreed to it and some of the kids involved (besides the one in the picture) verbally agreed as well. no way would i want this hanging over my kids head

i agree my brotha. i can't believe anyone would let there kids do that

That's way too early for these kids. I think having accepted scholarships to one of the most storied college basketball teams, puts all the pressure in the world on these kids. What if one of them suffers a serious career ending injury, is the University of Kentucky going to care. Probably, not. They'll just pull the scholarship and give it to the next kid in line.

'Cuse in the house! ('96). Totally agreed. There is enough pressure already to perform at the high school level...especially if you show promise. Kids do not need the distraction and the pressure coming from big (or any size) program while still in school. The focus needs to be on academics, life skills and developing fundamental skills as an athlete. I think early signing may cause overtraining and significantly increase the likelihood of injury and psychological issues...most certainly burn out. Let's kids be kids and play. The serious stuff comes soon enough.

Way to early - way to speak up, Brit. Even if that's the most random person to be speaking out in the world.

He should take it. He should also buy a house, commit to a woman and settle down, maybe have a few kids. He's 13 for cryin outloud! you're not gettin any younger, kid!
just kidding, seriously, this is rediculous that any parent would consider it.
this is a huge decision that an 8th grader is not equiped to make.

lol now that's funny

Colleges used to only get commitements from seniors, now it's juniors, next it will be sophomores, but this is kind of ludicrous. Those kids don't know what they want to do that early in life. It's like they are being pressured and they have enough to worry about besides coaches (blood sucking sharks) trying to grab them this early.

yes they are
