Now I know there are a lot of you out there that think the Canadian Football League is just a league for the players that can't make an NFL squad. And while that may be true, the CFL is just as entertaining in my opinion. The rules provide a better flow for the game and many more big plays than seen in the National Football League.
First of all, the CFL plays 3-down football. This forces the teams to play more of an aerial game, which is more exciting than a run-based game, and you can all agree with me on that.
Second of all, while the level of football may not be as high as it is in the NFL, it is just as challenging to excel in the CFL as it is in the NFL. For example, when Ricky Williams came into the CFL after being suspended for a whole year by the NFL, his rushing average was last among all starting running backs in the Canadian Football League. In fact, his play was so bad that he had the starting job stripped from him later on in the season. Shouldn't a Pro Bowl running back like Ricky Williams be tearing up the competition in the CFL and breaking all the single-season rushing records. Oh, and one more thing, Ricky had his arm broken about halfway through the season by one of the CFL's fierce linebackers.
Thirdly, the CFL's rule on missed field goals has to be the rule that creates most of the excitement in this football league. If a kicker misses a field goal, it can be returned. And about 50% of the time the returner decides to bring it out of the endzone, they take it all the way down the field for a touchdown. Now, I know this happened last year in the NFL with Devin Hester returning a missed field goal, but in the CFL returning a missed field goal for a touchdown happens about once a week because the kickers in the CFL aren't the best in the world I have to admit, and the only people out there to stop the return are big lineman and the kicker.
And finally, what I think is the best part of the CFL is the overtime rule. For those of you who don't know it, here it is :
-Each team gets an opportunity with the ball on the opponent's 35-yard line.
-No matter whether the first team to start with the ball is stopped or scores, the other team will get an opportunity with the ball.
-The team that scores the most points in the mini-game wins.
-If the teams are tied after the first mini-game, it will go to a second and final mini-game.
For example:
If Team A starts off the mini-game with the ball, and they end up making a field goal, then Team B will then get the ball at Team A's 35-yard line. If they get a touchdown they win, if they get no points they lose, and if they get a field goal it goes to the second mini-game. If it is tied after the second mini-game, the game will be recorded as a tie.
A tie rarely happens and this is the fairest way to determine the winner of a game, other than the NFL where the game is basically determined on the coin toss.
Also, just this past week, Winnipeg Blue Bomber's receiver Milt Stegall broke the all-time CFL Touchdown Record of 137 Touchdowns set by running backs George Reed and Mike Pringle. Stegall currently has 139 and counting.
