Does Memphis deserve its "non-academic" rep?

Unlike the other Final Four teams, Memphis is singled out for having a squad of pros masquerading as college students. But is that a fair perception?

None of the final four teams excel at graduating their players. In fact the academic standing of nearly all DIV1 basketball squads is piss poor.Memphis should not be extolled any more than the others.Google basketball graduation rates and you'll see what I mean.I don't plan on watching college basketball again anytime soon.

I agree with you boogerking...although your name kinda grosses me out. Hardly any basketball stars graduate college these days. I don't know why everyone is picking on Memphis.

'Sokay. That viking picture kinda grosses ME out.Anyhow if you lived in Philly and were familiar with Howard Eskin it would make more sense.

Its always good to have a non academic rep

You know.....you just make it way too easy, TC.

They are there for one thing and one thing only.......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

As long as the NBA is paying Millions to shoot a ball. I reckon it won't be to many graduating athlete. HMMM, millions possibly now get degree later. I JUST DON'T KNOW!!

Yes, they do deserve that non-academic rep because those guys are all thugs.

Thugs are great, what are you talkin about, figures you don't like them, you are a Carolina fan

An SO ARE YOU , U RACIST BIT@#!!!

how am I being racist you dumba$$? I never said I didn't like a certain group of people

Not u ! That TarHeel chump called them thug's, not u, read the post first!!

Bitter fan.

Allright, sorry Undataka2000, my bad

unc and ucla have very high graduation rates for power conference schools while kansas and especially memphis are on the lower side. considering memphis and kansas are in the final i think it is safe to say that coaches these days wouldn't mind recruiting a player who will most likely declare for the draft the next year.

so is it the program's fault when players go pro and don't finish their degrees?

University of Arizona graduated 0, none , of its black players (not bringing race into it just stating the facts) in the last SIX years!Do you think they all went to the NBA?Granted this program is probably the worst offender but its indicative of how low the NCAA permits schools to go.If you can't convince a twenty year old of the value of a degree and the gamble of trying to go pro then you are failing both the student AND the university as a coach and employee.

players going pro or is entertaining thoughts of going pro OR are at the end of their season and they are upper classmen, usually quit class after their season is over.

Do you honestly think the coaches can "convince them the value of a degree" when they don't want to be there to begin with?

I believe its part of their responsibility as members of the schools faculty.Look, I root for Temple. They graduate about 50% of their players.I don't see many of them on NBA draftboards. Either they were morons to begin with, and therefore had no buisness attending Temple, or their mentors failed them by allowing them to believe their basketball skill was all that mattered to the school.I highly doubt this scenario is unique to Temple. The NBA did a disservice to young athletes when it started accepting college dropouts into the pros without making them wait a year.

i agree with you that many student-"athletes" are morons who don't belong in an institution of higher learning, but is that why they are there to begin with?

does your average professor go to the hoods of New York or LA orto the backwood areas of Florida to help a borderline student into school if they can't run fast, hit jump shots or dunk the ball? it's a vicious circle and if graduation rates are indeed the school's concern, they have no one to blame but themselves...

Agreed. Certainly, I don't need GPAs displayed along with other stats. But if someone from TU basketball or football was a proven winner AND a complete dipshit I can honestly say I would rather not have him on the roster. Of course,my opinion might change if TU ever won anything.

Let's see, someone is going to pay me millions to play basketball, smoke dope, get arrested ,and still be accepted. I'm gone.

Your speaking in terms of the "best" case scenario.Obviously not everyone is drafted and even fewer have lucrative pro careers.Of course this is the case with all pro sports.I don't remember his name but the runningback from Ohio State that tried to go pro and got stuck because of the age requirement didn't fare so well.I seem to recall he wasn't even allowed to play college ball again.I'm really speaking about the conflict of interest that comes with recruiting players that can draw attention to a school through sports who are serious academic risks.

Well, they weren't smart enough to practice their free-throw shooting and you can see where that got 'em.

I agree with the ridiculous academic standards and the easy classes the players can take. The players only need to be register for six credits in their Freshman Fall to play basketball and theoretically they never have to attend another class. The ghetto chest thumping, tats and wannabee gangster behaviors are so boring. Just remember the Cinderella team Louisville who won it all years ag0 -not one player ever played in the NBA. High school is not much better, but it seems more real and less corrupted and fun to watch.
