OJ Mayo scorces 32 but SC loses

Super recruit OJ Mayo scored 32 points but led the Trojans to an opening game loss to unranked Mercer. The Trojan guard however, had only 7 points when it actually mattered and led the team with 8 turnovers. Is this going to be a preview of the entire season, where Mayo "gets his" but the Trojans lose as a team?

He is clearly in the top 5 of freshman talent wise. What will be interesting is to see how Tim Floyd Develops him. He appears to be very "uncoachable". I love his antics - throwing the ball into the crowd after his incredible dunk in his last HS game - But he has to realize that he isn't the best player on the floor every night like back then. I guess he has to learn Humility - losing to Mercer is a start.

Yea but he'll view the loss to Mercer as a team loss and that he did it all with 35 points. He won't hang this one on himself.

he MAY be a top 5 talent, but he certainly isn't a top 5 teammate... just ask the guy who's jaw he broke. besides, it took him 27 shots to get 32 points.

apparently, Floyd has turned his team over to OJ Prima Donna.

Damn, did he really take 27 shots!! That's Allen Iverson style

Did not expect Mercer to shoot so well against the Trojans. But if Mayo's game is a sign of what is to come, USC is going to have some fun.

HA! Since when has consumer basketball ever been about teamplay. We pride our basketball players on their ability to score points and throw down dunks. There is a premium on athletic ability and little attention is payed to the "glue guys" who emphasize team play. That's what you get when you have SI writers doing front page articles on 15 year olds - I can't say I would be any different. I miss the old days of college bball though...

Dunks are awesome.

Wow a 6'6" two guard who can take 27 shots a game and dunk? Why is this kid so hyped? He just doesn't live up to KG, LeBron, and Oden standards.

USC was a much better team last year, but with Mayo at least they'll be in the national media every night...for the most part probably not for the right reasons.

Give the kid a break! He's only a freshman, so let's be fair and give an opportunity to develop and adapt to the college game. If he doesn't live up to the hype, blame on the media. They've been hyping Mayo's ego since he was 8-years-old.

his entourage has been doing that, not so much the media. he definitely has the ability to be a star, but he'll never leave his posse, the cancer will continue to spread.

The media has been hounding him since he was in middle school, but he's embraced the culture of being the star and nobody really took him aside and protected him from the brainwashing. Who's fault is that?

never seen him play, but all I keep hearing about is the red flags

either this kid is going to prove a lot of people wrong (like Allen Iverson) or prove a lot of people right (Starbury?)

Right now I'm def leading towards starbury, but what do I know?
