Top 10 reasons we all hate Duke

Awesome article. I'm shocked that an Arizona fan could make it through an entire post on hating Duke without mentioning the 2001 title game where you guys got jobbed by the refs.

I wanted to write it from the point of every fan not just Arizona fan. We all hate Duke, not just the folks in Tucson who think Gilbert, Gardner and crew deserved a ring. (A Win also would have shut up all the Duke fans who say they've got 3 and we've got 1)

As a Maryland fan, I think we should have played you guys instead of Duke. We choked away the Final Four game with some help from the refs.

i can't stand duke. seriously, they should give paulus a towel when he goes in the game, because he's on the floor more than the wipers, so he might as well help out while he's down there. and their fans are so annoying, like they're God's gift to sports. a 1,000 student fan base at every game? is there a more overrated group of sporting fans? and against Maryland last year, the best chant they had was repeating "darryl" i suppose to distract DJ Strawberry, but they still got smoked. clever, cameron crazies. good job.

Come tourney time, Duke won't have the muscle inside that's necessary to win it all. As soon as a team with some perimeter D gets in their face, goodnight and goodbye.

Aren't they really like the Atlanta Braves of college basketball? Who else has won fewer championships with more talent? And yet Coach K is a God. It's like having the 2006 FIBA U.S. team chock full of stars and losing to Greece and Argentina. Oh wait.....

LMBO! Not exactly. Mike knows how to motivate his kids when they piss him off on both ends of the floor. That very motivation has gotten him to the First Monday in April 3 times with good result at the end of 40 minutes. However, It will not be the case this year. They are playing smart/small ball what ever you choose to to say it. Duke's lack of size will hurt them in March.

OMG! LOL! And i'm not sure about that cheating part either. Mike is like the ''TEFLON DON'' of coaching. Numerous times i've seen him getting in the faces of officials and nothing was done about it.

no shit that is why Mike K is not a coach just a guide. anyone can coach a all-star time. I would like to see him coach the kids that aren't born with money.

He's still a coach regardless if you hate/love him. His rep unfortunately is too STANDOUT from his own glow. After all, he is A Hall of Famer. Me personally, i have my own opinions of Mike and the program but he is still a good coach and he can Macgyver a team from nothing to something. He has the ability to do so. His players on the other hand are sheltered MAMA'S/DADDY'S BOYS. LOL!

The biggest haters of Duke would have to be Kentucky Wildcat fans, remember "The Shot Heard Around The World" 1992 Yeah and guess what they are still made about that. I live in kentucky and u bring that up they want to rip ur head off.

I'm a Duke grad and admit the Devils get a lot of calls. The top 10 list was pretty well done actually. But I think the main reason the whole country outside of the Duke alumni or the various bandwagon Tobacco Road b-ball fans hate the Dookies is that you can pencil them in to the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 practically every year. American sports fans like to see parity. Just consider how many people wanted the Pats to lose on Sunday. The media loves winners and the more highlights or analysis they devote to the likes of Duke, the Yankees, Red Sox, Patriots, etc., the more sports fans not affiliated with those teams want change. I can't stand the Yankees, Red Sox, and Patriots for these exact reasons. It's like professional sports teams outside the northeast don't even exist. At least in college football and basketball location doesn't dictate the amount of media coverage a team gets. Ever been to Durham? Here's some advice. Don't waste your time. Chapel Hill is a fun little college town. Durham is a shithole. It's up there with Gary, Indiana.

So all you haters out there, here's a message. We don't give a f*ck. In fact, we laugh at all the fuss. Don't y'all have better things to do? So while we're kicking back waiting for selection Sunday to roll around, you'll still be bitching about how much Vitale wants to blow Coach K or how Arizona got "robbed" in the 2001 title game even though they lost by double figures. I never camped out for a game, but I still got to see plenty of awesome basketball without having to paint my nipples blue and sleep in some urine-stained tent for a month prior.

The fact of the matter is, the epicenter of college basketball is the 15-501 HWY between Chapel Hill and Durham. And with Wake Forest and NC State in the neighborhood, you have four very respectable programs all within about 100 square miles. The ACC is usually the best conference (this year it's probably the PAC-10). That's why the media pays so much attention to the Dookies. So maybe UNC will win next time when Lawson is healthy. But you cannot argue that last night's victory was emphatic. Duke is a legitimate #2 team in the countryright now, and the only reason they aren't #1 is Memphis' picnic conference schedule.

Keep on hating everyone. It makes the month of March so much more exciting.

Oh yes i will continue to keep hating believe me i will. lol! However before i'ma hater, i'm also a player, a former coach, and fan of this game. Rivlary will always be important on any level of competition. No matter the genre. Yes Duke won, and the result will be different in Cameron with a healthy Ty Lawson, Yes Memphis RPI is a joke and they will Lose a game, but who will cut the Nets in the first Monday in April? Here's the thing, it's that He Hate Me Attitude that everyone hates. Yes people hate the Patriots, the Blue Devils, and the Yankees and it because of their "I'm entitled" attitudes, not just the players, but the fans as well. I'm pretty sure Duke didn't make it past the first round last year so there goes your pencil us in for Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight, and yes I realize you said practically every year. If you read the article you will see that my statement was not We hate Duke because they win. In fact, in the first couple lines, I state that's not the reason. It's the Kryzyzewski is god, we're holier than thou attitude. The we're smarter than you chants which is ironic since there are probably a couple guys on the basketball team that wouldn't get into Duke if they couldn't dribble, shoot, and flop. It's them being shoved down our collective throats. And the reason Duke gets to the Sweet Sixteen is the fact that they get a top seed and a cake walk through the first two rounds because they don't play anyone out of conference, and the ACC has been declining in talent year after year to the point that it's pretty much down to UNC and Duke. Their rpi is 24, and that's only because they play North Carolina. They will most likely be upset in the Sweet Sixteen again this year after a probable 1 seed and stroll through the first couple rounds, just like their players taking steps without dribbling on the court while Coach K is whining to the refs.

For some reason I hated Duke when Wojo was running the show and they sucked so I think there' something more than just your parity theory. Maybe the program is intentionally portraying itself as uncool ... or at least intentionally giving off that ambiguously gay vibe. This pic was on their website today. Seriously. Just cause they get good players and are coached well isn't a reason to hate. Just because your favorite team isn't a top caliber team every year isn't a reason to bash one that is. Duke is great for college basketball and always will be.

Look. No one denies that ''they'' are good. The same can be said of Memphis, Kansas,UCLA,Florida, and North Carolina. Consistency of the top elite programs year end and year out brings a form of Hatred as well as Respect. There isn't a single team from Amateur to Professional that isn't Hated or Respected. This is why we love playing,coaching,watching, cheering, jeering, swearing... you get the point. It draws an interest to us all. It makes good for ''Cigarette&Coffee talk'' or ''Beer& Brats talk.'' Whatever the case may be, even when we blog our hearts out here in the YARD or any other site for that matter, is because we have have an interest in this thing we call ''Competitive Banter.'' (Thanks Tony Reali!) i know i kinda went off the deep end with this just a tad (insert laugh or criticism here) But that's what makes this interesting every single day we wake up. To either Beg each ones Pardons, Differ, or in some cases agree with one another. Competition and Jealousy has been issue since Adam and Eve, Caine and Able, and so forth. Cause Psycho T never travels right? Traveling and no calls is a problem across all levels of basketball not just in Duke games. Obv I'm a Duke alum. I think part of the reason people hate us is we play such a boring brand of basketball. Great defense and kill you with threes. People want to see drives to the lane a la Kobe or Lebron. NBA was never more boring than when the Pistons were winning the East every year. With that said, check out this Duke team this year. We've got three guys in Henderson, Nelson and frosh Nolan Smith that can take it to the hoop and a legitimate freshman of the year in Kyle Singler. Not thinking we'll get too far in the tourney but this is not your prototypical Duke team.
One last point, I hate it more when non-Dukies tell me they like Duke. Why would you like Duke if you didnt go to school there? I guarantee we've beat your team at some point (unless you went to UConn). That's like being a Cowboys fan from New York.

Dukie here that did not go to the school. Dukies come in all shapes, colors and geographical areas. Im a transplant from Ma. The first encounter I ever had was in 96, the year I came down here and needed an eye specialist, Which was the Duke Eye Care Center, thet truly saved both my eyes from going blind. I have such a heart for Duke and will root for them ALWAYS!! GO DUKE. Such a classy team.
