Utah State standout G Steven Ashworth enters transfer portal
Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Utah State standout guard Steven Ashworth announced Thursday that he is entering the transfer portal.

The All-Mountain West first-team selection led Utah State in scoring (16.2 points per game), assists (4.5), 3-point baskets (111) and steals (41) in 35 appearances (25 starts) this season.

The 111 3-pointers are second most in a season in Utah history behind school legend Jaycee Carroll (114 in 2007-08). Ashworth has 204 career treys in 97 games (42 starts) for the Aggies.

Ashworth was part of Utah State's 2018 class before serving a two-year church mission. His decision comes eight days after coach Ryan Odom departed for VCU and he said the Aggies' repeated coaching turnover was part of his decision process.

Tim Duryea and Craig Smith have also served as head coach at Utah State during Ashworth's association with the program.

"Experiencing three coaching changes since I committed has helped me realize it is time to explore all options for myself, to ultimately find the best fit for my wife and I," Ashworth said in his announcement on Twitter.

"I will forever be grateful to Utah State for giving me a chance. This university believed in me and allowed me to progress in my basketball career just how I envisioned as a kid."

Ashworth is the third Aggies starter to enter the portal since Odom's departure. Max Shulga (11.9 scoring average this season) and Sean Bairstow (10.3) entered on Monday.

The trio's decisions come after Utah State went 26-9 and reached the NCAA Tournament before losing to Missouri in the first round.
