Berkeley tree sitters finally coming down

After 18 tumultuous months the Berkeley tree sitters are finally coming down. The University has attacked the situation with more force than they have in the past, and the efforts are paying off as the legal front is coming in favor of the University. Although the judge held off the start of construction for the new Student Athlete High Performance Center, the University has a few small things to do to ensure that construction begins soon. Also, they have been granted an expedited hearing to rule on when that construction may commence. All in all, we're closer to finally starting construction on something that was scheduled to begin 2 years ago. We need this to happen, or our football program will fall behind the rest of the Pac-10 and the nation.

It's about effing time, those damn tree sitters have cost Cal a load of money!

Just before I moved from San Francisco back to the East Coast, this was all unfolding, and I was really frustrated with the tree sitters: it was a pretty dangerous situation. And my understanding is that it was really the community organization opposed to Cal's plans that really pushed the legal agenda, NOT the tree sitters.

Yes, that is true. Because of the City's insistence that the plans were not up to code, the tree sitters began to occupy the oak grove outside of Memorial Stadium. Maybe they weren't the best plans, but the University has now had to waste thousands of dollars on the removal of them, guarding of them, and legal proceedings to get the issue resolved. There was a pretty heated exchange between protesters and police yesterday if you watched the news.

Damn those hippies, ruining whatever chance Cal football had at becoming a consistent power in the Pac-10.

Now Cal can begin their dream of upgrading their stadium.

A dream is exactly what it's been the past couple of years. I remember after my freshman year when Tedford signed his extension, that was one of the provisions that was supposed to happen immediately. Well, 4 years later here we are with the same stadium.

Isn't the stadium built on a fault line or something? Has the school figured that part out, yet?
