Losing can be Accepted at Notre Dame (But Only If your Coach is Caucasian)

Tyrone Willingham got off to a great start at Notre Dame. He began the 2002 season by going 8-0, becoming the only first-year coach in Notre Dame history to win 10 games. Some will argue that it was with Bob Davie's players. For his efforts he was named the ESPN/Home Depot College Coach of the Year, the Black Coaches Association Male Coach of the Year, and the George Munger Award College Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club. Notre Dame finished 5-7 in 2003 and was beaten badly in four of their losses. In 2004, Notre Dame posted a 6-5 record then released its African American football coach after going a combined 21--15 in his short career.

Enter Caucasian Mensa member and former Fighting Irish alum Charlie Weis. With a record of 9-2, his team finished the regular season ranked 6th in the Bowl Championship Series standings, only to lose to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl in 2005. During the 2006 season, Weis led the preseason #2 Fighting Irish to a 10-2 regular season record, and a second straight Bowl Championship Series berth, only to lose again, this time in the Sugar Bowl to LSU and finish ranked 17th.

After all Willingham's players (mainly Brady Quinn) have come and gone, Weis receives a 10-year deal worth $30 to $40 million. This would make him the ND coach until 2015.

So far in 2007 Notre Dame has gone 1-8. Their loss to Navy this weekend snapped their 43-game win streak against the Midshipmen, which was an NCAA record. Charlie Weis's record of 20 wins and 14 losses is now one game worse than his predecessor Tyrone Willingham after the same number of games. This season would actually reflect his recruiting more than either of his previous two years.

I ask you Yardbarkers, as someone who is neither a Notre Dame fan nor a Notre Dame hater, will racism in College Football Coaching ever end?

OOO. I like your style.

Racism never dies sadly.

ty willingham was let go because someone who was supposed to be better was free (weis) Willingham isnt exactly tearing it up at U-dub my friend. yes, weis is a bust, but what should they do? fire him and hire another loser? Its not racism, its business. its risk. weis's resume in the pros looked really good, and notre dame thought they could get an upgrade. If he was winning, no one would be saying anything. he is losing though- so is ty. Notre dame took a risk and lost. If willingham was white nobody would care. hell, not too many people care anyway.

I'm guessing Washington doesn't draw the same recruits as Notre Dame? Is it fair to assume that? Yet he still has 3 wins to ND's 1 this year. Where there any black coaches available to replace Willingham? I'm not sure if they even interviewed any.

But Weis ALMOST beat USC!

Notre Dame needs to lower their standards a little...till then they are what they are. And right now that is worse than mud.

Why does race matter if you are a coach? Take who is better. Alabama had the same problem w/ sylvester croom(black) and mike shula(white) they both sucked. Like I said, business is business. If willingham recruited so well at notre dame , why cant he do it at washington? Or is it like why weis cant win as a coach outside of new england. he had tom brady, and willingham had notre dame. Name matters, look at the popularity contest that is the bcs. like I said earlier, I personally think weis and willingham both suck. neither can finish. notre dame made the bed they are lying in. As a trojan fan, I am happy that they are horrible.

I don't think Notre Dame has as many video cameras on campus as the Patriots did at their facility.

Notre Dame also has a 90% graduation rate among black students.

Hmmmm... I don't know where you are getting that statistic. As an alumni I serious doubt, that it is 90%. I have included a link from the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. They state that in 2006 it was 84%. I highly doubt the number jumped to 6% in one year. Good try though, I admire your effort.
