Losing can be Accepted at Notre Dame (But Only If your Coach is Caucasian)
Tyrone Willingham got off to a great start at Notre Dame. He began the 2002 season by going 8-0, becoming the only first-year coach in Notre Dame history to win 10 games. Some will argue that it was with Bob Davie's players. For his efforts he was named the ESPN/Home Depot College Coach of the Year, the Black Coaches Association Male Coach of the Year, and the George Munger Award College Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club. Notre Dame finished 5-7 in 2003 and was beaten badly in four of their losses. In 2004, Notre Dame posted a 6-5 record then released its African American football coach after going a combined 21--15 in his short career.
Enter Caucasian Mensa member and former Fighting Irish alum Charlie Weis. With a record of 9-2, his team finished the regular season ranked 6th in the Bowl Championship Series standings, only to lose to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl in 2005. During the 2006 season, Weis led the preseason #2 Fighting Irish to a 10-2 regular season record, and a second straight Bowl Championship Series berth, only to lose again, this time in the Sugar Bowl to LSU and finish ranked 17th. After all Willingham's players (mainly Brady Quinn) have come and gone, Weis receives a 10-year deal worth $30 to $40 million. This would make him the ND coach until 2015. So far in 2007 Notre Dame has gone 1-8. Their loss to Navy this weekend snapped their 43-game win streak against the Midshipmen, which was an NCAA record. Charlie Weis's record of 20 wins and 14 losses is now one game worse than his predecessor Tyrone Willingham after the same number of games. This season would actually reflect his recruiting more than either of his previous two years. I ask you Yardbarkers, as someone who is neither a Notre Dame fan nor a Notre Dame hater, will racism in College Football Coaching ever end? 10 Comments On: "Losing can be Accepted at Notre Dame (But Only If your Coach is Caucasian)"
