Stanford fires Walt Harris

The nightmare 1-11 season finally ended on Saturday for the lowly Stanford Cardinal with a loss to rival California in the 109th Big Game. But not only is Walt Harris' season finally over, is career at Stanford has been ended. The Cardinal decided to fire Harris after his 6-17 record in two years on The Farm. Although the Cardinal were devastated by injuries and off-season coaching defections, they were not even competitive in most of their Pac-10 games this year and fan support had dwindled. Their brand new stadium was mostly half empty or dominated by opposing crowds. This is a once proud program in shambles; it will be interesting to see who they hire or who even applies for the job.

I wonder if there will be anyone lining up for this job...

If I had to guess, no. They've "risen their academic standards" and are not looking to do any athletes any favors to get in. That, in today's athletic world, will not bode well for recruits.

What happened to Stanford? They used to be a top notch program right? Guess they are having trouble finding brains and brauns...Nice Stadium though.

I really think that is the case. The new athletic director is reversing course and trying to hold athletes to the same standards as regular student applicants, which is going to mean inferior talent overall. Yea, they might get a good athlete who's smart every once and awhile, but that's not going to field a contending Pac-10 team.

Is Norm Chow in the discussion?

Possibly, but I don't see that happening because the level of talent needed to contend in the Pac-10 cannot be found at Stanford.
