Why isn't Charlie Wies in hot water?

Bob Davie said some pretty interesting things about the direction of ND's program. And although Wies has a better record than he or Willingam, Davie's comments are justified by Wies' Big game record.

To pararphrase Mercury News writer John Wilner, Ty Willingham got fired not for his record (21-15), but because his team didn't perform in big games. Willingham's Irish lost five games by 31 points or more during his tenure, and it cost him his job.

Fast forward to the Charlie Weis era at Notre Dame and what's changed? The Irish have gotten drilled in big games since Weis arrived at South Bend.

In the past 366 days, Notre Dame has been beaten like a dog on national television no less than four times:

Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20 - Fiesta Bowl (1-2-2006)

Michigan 47, Notre Dame 21- at home (9-23-2006)

USC 44, Notre Dame 24 - at USC (11-25-2006)

LSU 41, Notre Dame 14 - Sugar Bowl (1-3-2007)

And the worst part of those four awful losses is that Notre Dame never was really competitive in any of those games.

But just be Davie coming out and saying this, Weis is in the clear.

He has been playing with Willinghams recruits and has done great. Without Weis, they wouldn't be in the big games. Would you rather lose in the Sugar Bowl or win in the Gaylord Hotels Bowl? Wait until Weis gets his recruits and then you can judge him really good in about 2 years. Note that a good part of Willingham's wins were in his first year and his wins decreased.

That's definitely a valid point that gets lost in the college game, but by that philosophy, Willingham actually got fired because he was coaching Davie's recruits. The fact is Weis' teams have been awful in big games. They haven't even been competitive and these are all games that many predicted they would win. The Bill Belichick umbrella is still shielding Weis from criticism, but that will change if he keeps getting shelled in huge games.

yeah, but willingham recruited quinn and samrdjiza and quinn was mediocre and many people wanted to see him on the bench and samardjiza was like 7th string. weis comes in and turns them into all-americans. same could be said for a couple others too,but jeff and brady were the main people.

One Simple Reason: People remember what he did in New England as an offensive coordinator. BYE

I think we have to wait another couple season and see how the talent recruited by Weis will perform. I am not sure but I believe this year's Irish recruiting class is the best they have had in a while, and judging from the All-America bowl, they are gonna wreak havoc on opposing teams in seasons to come.
