LSU accidentally overpaid Brian Kelly by more than $1 million in 2022

Brian Kelly did a bang-up job in his first season as head coach for the LSU Tigers. He went 10-4 in the regular season and finished things off with a 63-7 rout of Purdue in the Citrus Bowl. One could say that Kelly earned his money in his first season at LSU, but he apparently got paid a little bit too much, according to an audit.

The Associated Press (h/t ESPN) reported an audit showed LSU accidentally sent duplicate payments to Kelly in 2022, leading to him earning $1,001,368 in supplemental payments that he wasn't expected to make last season. Per the report, Kelly started getting the double payments in May and they continued until LSU noticed in November.

"LSU management and the head football coach have enacted an adjusted payment schedule so the amount of overpayment will be recouped by the conclusion of fiscal year 2023," the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's office said in a statement.

Whether or not Kelly noticed the double payments wasn't disclosed, but the payments were made directly to him or his LLC. Chances are, as a college football coach at one of the biggest blue-blood programs in the country, he didn't have time to notice.

Either way, all is well that ends well, because it's not like Kelly is just pocketing that extra scratch and moving on.

He might feel that adjustment a bit as the money is recouped by LSU.
