Sidney Poitier's cause of death revealed as combination of heart failure, Alzheimer's dementia, prostate cancer

Sidney Poitier died Jan. 6 at 94 years old, and now his official cause of death has been determined.

Per Poitier's death certificate, obtained by E! News, the acting pioneer passed away "from a combination of heart failure, Alzheimer's dementia and prostate cancer."

"While he had suffered from dementia and cancer for years, per the document, he experienced heart failure in the hours before his passing," E! relayed. "The death certificate stated that Poitier passed away at his Beverly Hills home and was cremated."

Poitier made Hollywood history by becoming the first Black man to win the Oscar best actor for his role of Homer in 1963's "Lilies of the Field." He took home the honor at the 36th Academy Awards in 1964, and he kept the title as the only Black man to win the category until Denzel Washington did for 2001's "Training Day." Coincidentally (or maybe not), Poitier also received an Honorary Award from the Academy on the same 2002 night.

Washington recently reminisced on the day he met Poitier while visiting "Jimmy Kimmel Live" earlier this week:

"I was doing 'A Soldier's Play,' which went on to become 'A Soldier's Story' the movie — won the Pulitzer Prize, all the kind of stuff. He came to see the play, and he came backstage and took pictures with all of us. Everybody was sort of thinning out, and he came over to me, he says, 'You know, you're good. You are very good.' I was like, [Smiles]. You know, what do you say? It was Sidney Poitier. Like, 'Yes, sir. Thank you.'"

Also among the countless tributes, Halle Berry penned a first-person essay honoring Poitier for Variety.
