US Open: Swingers, Contenders, and Tiger Woods

Angel Cabrera defends his 2007 US Open Championships this year against a tough crowd at Torrey Pines.

As usual, Tiger Woods will be all the rage, not only because of his superstar status, but because Woods is coming off a knee surgery that took place in April.

This begs the question: Can Woods regain that "feel" for the game that has brought him so much success over the years?

No one knows for sure except Tiger Woods.

However, one thing is for sure--Tiger wants another US Open Championship. The two-time Open winner won his last title in 2002 at Bethpage State Park.

Without a doubt, Woods will be the favorite coming into this year's US Open. If you look at the numbers, Tiger should rank on top with a south course record of 62 at Torrey Pines. More over, Woods is a proven winner at Torrey Pines with his uncanny ability to win the Buick Invitational repeatedly.

The short list of contenders include Phil Mickelson, who is coming off a strong win at the Colonial and has built up momentum coming into the Championship.

Mickelson is also a San Diego native and has fared well at Torrey Pines, making him a solid contender. Is this the year Mickelson becomes the Champion or does he become golf's version of the Buffalo Bills?

Speaking of contenders don't overlook Luke Donald and Stewart Cink. Both have fared well at Torrey Pines and both bring strong statistical credentials into this year's Open.

Pro's such as VJ Singh, KJ Choi, Retief Goosen, and Geoff Ogilvy are all great golfers, but for this year's Open they look more like swingers than contenders.

By swingers I mean players who will be swinging away with no real chance to win--not your next door neighbors.

None of these players have fared well at Torrey over the years. On the positive side, even though chances are poor for this group, they also lack any real pressure to win--which can make them dangerous.

Angel Cabrera's chances also look dim due to a less then stellar all around game and the extreme difficulty of winning back to back Open's.

Long shots who have a chance are this year's Players Championship winner Sergio Garcia, and Ryuji Imada, who is having a solid year coming in second to Woods at this years Buick Invitational.

The 108th 2008 US Open will be played at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California. The course will be played at 7,643 yards, par 71 from June 12 through June 15.
