Is Horse Racing Breeding Itself to Death?

A fantastic article by Sally Jenkins of The Washington Post. For every 1,000 races, 1.5 horses will receive career-ending and typically life-threatening injuries. Jenkins has seen racing horses get bigger and stronger while their legs look smaller and more fragile. Now, after the first on-track death at the Kentucky Derby, the horse-racing industry must ask itself this question: Is the thrill of ultra-competitive racing more important than the wellbeing of its athletes?

Eight Belles, the runner-up in the 134th Kentucky Derby, suffered mortal injury after the race....

this filly was not your average 3 year old filly.she is well developed with sturdy legs, not spindley, take a good look at her legs''perfect'' i do not think this was a case of bad breeding or confirmation. i do think that they should not be raced until they are fully developed and they are not at age 3.give them another year to grow and we would not see as many of these kinds of breakdowns.

check out her legs

i would just say that maybe her legs weren't dainty relative to other fillys, but just looking at the horse, you can see that its heavily muscled body is sitting on four thin supports. it's obvious to me by just looking at this picture that damage to one leg could be devastating. look how thin the ankles are compared to the rest of her body. i don't think it's necessarily bad breeding, but i think the injuries are related to general trends in breeding.

and this isn't the only crisis in horse racing related to competitiveness - what about jockeys with eating disorders?

Incidents like this certainly put a damper on the beauty of horse racing.

a beautiful horse she was and what a shame to know she broke 2 of her ankles an d had to be put down! maybe she'll be back like Barbaro... effin science!!!

The moral of the story is.....it doesn't pay to come in second!! Seriously, this is terrible everyone is just gambling with the horses lives!!

Regardless of breeding and whether you are into horse racing or not, this is just sad all around.
