Reds-Nats trade

The Reds and Nationals just completed a trade, and I am at a loss to understand it from a Reds perspective.

The Nats traded Gary Majewski, Bill Bray, Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris and Darryl Thompson for Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez, and Ryan Wagner.

In other words, the Reds traded away their chances to make the playoffs and acquired a collection of mediocre young talent and washed-up veterans. Majewski's an okay middle reliever, but hardly worth dealing for. Harris has been up and down from the minors all year, Bray is a middling young pitcher who might be able to be a somewhat effective middleman, and Royce Clayton - Royce Clayton's the type of player that makes you say, "He's still playing?" (In fairness, he's put up decent numbers this season - .270, 27 RBI, 8 steals, 36 runs, but hardly in Felipe Lopez's class.)

This is an interesting trade, meanwhile, as far as the Nats are concerned. First of all, for anyone not living in DC, the fans here are the most fickle I've ever seen. They all abandonned the team after their horrid April, had them in the post-season after a good three week period in May/June, and then were ready to sell off every last player after losing six of seven recently. This is not a good team, and I fully expected them to trade Soriano, Vidro, Livian Hernandez (assuming anyone would take him), and Jose Guillen. But with this trade it seems they are at least vying for a wild card spot this year. And even if they fall short, they've added some fine young players that will be a good core to build around along with Zimmerman, Patterson, and Cordero.

So, anyone want to explain what Cincy was thinking with this trade?

Looks like we're on the same page here. Absolutely devastating to be a Reds fan. There are no explanations.

I'm not sure it's too different, but if I were in a fantasy league where two owners pulled off this deal, I would veto it even if the league had the deepest of minor league benches.

At least this means Ryan Freel should get more time. Owners rejoice!

Wait...so does this mean that Rich Aurillia becomes the starting SS? Freel hasn't played there all year.

The deal should help the Reds defense at least, with CastroClayton providing an upgrade over Lopez, who could hit but already had committed 14 errors at short.
The Reds recalled infielder William Bergolla and outfielder Chris Denorfia - hitting .347 at AAAA Louisville.

This trade doesn't make much sense to me. Two everyday players for middle relievers? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say despite this "block buster" the Reds still miss the playoffs. I guess the upside is that Denorfia won't have to toil in the minors anymore.

That's true, it is a defensive upgrade and Majewski, albeit average, is a workhorse having appeared in 46 games already this season. That being said, I'm not sure where the upside is for the Reds here. This isn't a team that's sinking and looking to the future. I'm not sure why a team in the playoff race would make such a risky deal.

I'm going to run contrary to this crowd and say that Majewski is just the kind of middle relief that the Reds need to get to Guardado on a regular basis (okay, okay, I just heard Tim Kurkjian say that on ESPNEWS. He also said that a scout told him that Majewski was going to be taking over the closing spot from Guardado, so...).

Interesting. Although if that's the Red's plan, it makes even less sense. Majewski's value lies in the fact that appears in as many games and can throw as many innings as any middle reliever in baseball. Turning him into a closer would limit that value. This is the reason why they moved Todd Coffey out of the closer's role to begin with, because he can pitch in more games and have more two inning outings than he could as a closer. Why trade for Guardado then? Why give Guardado the closer's role now? Actually, they say Bill Bray could be a closer of the future. It almost seems like he would be a better choice to fill that role if Guardado struggled than Majewski, who should stay in a middle relief role.
