The Kennedy Clan Comes To The Bronx

Mike Mussina's out! Ian Kennedy will make his Major League debut this weekend against the Devil Rays. I really don't know anything about Kennedy, aside from the fact that he's highly touted by the Yankees. But the fact that they're going with Kennedy over Kei Igawa speaks volumes to me:

You can't really blame Igawa on the scouts. Cashman had plenty of warning from the scouts that Igawa would struggle in the AL East and be -- at best a decent 4th or 5th starter type. Why he ignored that advice and signed him instead of Ted Lilly, who practically begged the Yankees to sign him, I have no idea.

Comparing Igawa to Lilly is a little unfair. I'm in total agreement that Lilly would have been the better option, but his numbers likely wouldn't look the same in pinstripes facing Boston, Toronto and Tampa as they do against weaker offensive sqauds in the NL Central, not to mention the pitcher. In the grand scheme of things it was a gamble, but outside of Dice-K, there weren't any pitchers on the market that weren't. It's still possible Kei could turn into a reliable 4th or 5th starter. We'll see. Let's hope Ian Kennedy and some of the younger guys are good enough that we never have to find out.

The only reason I compared them is the price for Igawa was $46 million. The price for Lilly was $40 million plus the luxury tax, so pretty much a wash. I think the money would have been much better spent on Lilly.

No, the Sox got Dice-K so the Yankees had to copy and get a foreign pitcher. If Lilly was Japanese, the Yankees probably would've signed him. That's what I hate about this rivalry. They are just trying to 1-up each other instead of focusing on themselves. Everytime the Sox make a move, the question is always "Who will the Yankees get to counter the Sox deal?" or vice versa.

I watched Kennedy's last start in Buffalo. Kid has some great control. If he can maintain that, it should make up for his average fastball, change, and below average curve. Anything is better than Mussina at this point.

whitejordan32 might be right. How pathetic. The Mets did that a few years ago after the Yankees signed Matsui. All of a sudden Kaz Matsui was a Met. He stunk!
