Cubs Interested in Mets’ Dominic Smith?

The Chicago Cubs have engaged in trade talks with the New York Mets regarding first baseman Dominic Smith, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.

Smith, 27, is having a down year so far. After struggling with a bench role for the Mets at the beginning of the season, he was optioned to Triple-A at the end of May. When he returned to the MLB roster in late June, his issues persisted. For the year, he’s batting .194 with no home runs, 17 RBIs, 37 strikeouts, and a .560 OPS in 152 plate appearances.

Amidst a pennant push, the Mets are looking to upgrade their lineup before the August trade deadline. What they’re looking for in return for Smith remains unknown, however. Smith’s trade value is at an all-time low, which is surprising considering he was a former first-round draft pick in 2013.

Cubs First Base Outlook

Frank Schwindel and Alfonso Rivas have comprised the Chicago Cubs’ first-base platoon so far this season. Both players have endured struggles throughout the year.

Following a hot second half in 2021 that saw Schwindel post a slash line of .342/.389/.613 and 13 home runs, the righty has struggled to find his way. Through 65 games in 2022, Schwindel has a slash line of .238/.283/.383 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. As far as Rivas, his numbers are similar. In 64 games, the lefty has a slash line of .236/.313/.323 with three home runs and 23 RBIs.       

It’s hard to say if Smith would be an upgrade for the Cubs, but maybe he just needs consistent playing time after filling a backup role behind Pete Alonso. With two years of club control left and due just $3.95 million this year, Smith wouldn’t be the worst flier for the Cubs to take. If he doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and the Cubs could elicit a decent prospect from the Mets as well, what’s the worst that could happen?
