The Chicago White Sox announced on Saturday afternoon that manager Tony La Russa will not be returning to the dugout this season and will not manage the team for the remainder of the season.
Bench coach Miguel Cairo will continue to serve as interim manager in La Russa's absence.
The decision was made after La Russa underwent additional tests and medical procedures over the past week.

La Russa left the team in late August after having a pacemaker inserted for his heart. He has been the White Sox manager since the start of the 2021 season.
The White Sox won the American League Central a year ago but have taken a step back this season. They enter play on Saturday with a 76-75 record and are eight games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the top spot in the division.
