CBS Puts Mixed Martial Arts on Prime Time
Issue source: CBS Puts Mixed Martial Arts on Prime Time.
Perhaps I should be on Around The Horn. Buy: CBS previously had a deal with ProElite to air live mixed martial arts events on Showtime in 2007. Viewership must have been positive enough to warrant a broader distribution agreement. Prime time Saturday night is ideal for the intended demo; pre-gaming with free MMA in pristine HD is a dream scenario for males aged 21 - 35 (well, almost dream). Plus, Marriotti got the PPV estimates for UFC wrong by an order of magnitude (70K vs. 700K actual)! As I said back in December : "Mixed martial arts is going to be the second biggest sport worldwide by 2013". And any free, high-quality national broadcasts will help grow the sport. There is an interesting rivalry emerging between The UFC's Dana White and Elite XC's Gary Shaw. More on that later.
