Boston Celtics vs. Team USA - Who would win?

With the conclusion of the NBA Finals this June and the 2008 Summer Olympics looming on the horizon, we here at WhatIfSports have had basketball on the brain.

We weren't alone in this mindset, however, as internet bloggers over at BrewHoop.com also began to theorize about the great basketball queries of today- namely, who would win between the 2008 Men's Olympic Basketball Team and the 07-08 Boston Celtics Championship squad.

This competition was made even more intriguing by our recent calculations which determined the 07-08 Celtics to be the 3rd greatest NBA Championship team of all time. (Article Available on Askmen.com next month.)

Being devoted sportsfans ourselves, we decided to once again call on our super computer to create a real life solution for this fantasy problem, and the results were much like you would expect.

Using 1,000 separate simulations of a seven-game "NBA Championship"-esque series, we determined the most common result to be a Team USA victory in five games. This outcome occurred 85% of the time, with an average 14 point margin of victory. Our game summaries also revealed that LeBron James (40%) and Kobe Bryant (35%) were the most frequent recipients of Player of the Game honors with superstars Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, and surprisingly Rajon Rondo also being mentioned many times.

Celtics by a mile...

umm.. Celtics are champs no taking that away, but hello? All Star Team. Let's not forget that Lebron gave the Celtics a run for their money without any help at all.

thank you for being logical...every team ran the celtics think about the bench on USA...its like another starting 5

yes, i agree with both of you...thank you for making sense

What iF Sports.Com must be on the same planet Sam Cassell's on. This a no brainer USA, all the way unless David Stern is the special guest ref along with Vince McMahon and Shance McMahon as the other refs, then Boston might have a darn good chance...

yeah Rcs360 about bench, but it comes down to mental mind-set...the All-Stars would be playin other Americans, so take away the USA pride motivation...and Defense, and the C's lived and breathe it, so tough call...C's in 7 healthy 100%...good debate

c'mon the anti-C's'er, it was in that afterglow of total team goal...on top of the world...think about it, who does US team have to play for in this never to happen game...stats?...but agree, the talent level disparity would be huge...ok, stripper

USA, because of their bench.

I'd have to agree, USA because of their bench. But I don't think it's such a cut and dry conclusion that many on here seem to be making. Does anyone remember the 2004 Finals? The Lakers came in with All-Stars at almost every position - Kobe and Shaq (both in their prime), Karl Malone, and Gary Payton. This seemed like an unbeatable roster. But the Pistons disposed of them in 5. I think that proved that team cohesiveness is enough to beat superior talent. The Celtics (as much as I hate them) have not only All-Star caliber talent at 3 - perhaps even 4 - positions, they have the team mentality the 2004 Pistons had. I think they give Team USA a run for their money, but in the end, Team USA's bench makes the difference

Yeah, but Malone and Payton were older than dirt during that period. And the Pistons were loaded with talent, they had All-Star Memo Okur coming off their bench

They can't stop 5 offensive weapons at one time.
Team USA if they are smart enough.

CP3, Kobe, Lebron, Amare, Dwight ... enough said.

celtics. der.

I would say Celic's in 5. The main reason is TEAM vs stars. These guys show that they know how to play as a team, no selfishness involved. Team USA is filled with superstars that have all at one time or another, been accused of being a it selfish with the ball.

Pierce's Celtics vs Bird's Celtics which team is better

tough this one, based on playoffs on the road and more clutch moments, the 80's teams...for an A+ Defense, as those 80's team were all about fast break easy 2's, then I'd say these 08' dudes...an unknown factor is if Bias stayed alive...but time keeps on ticking, so 80's guys by a thread because they had no bench whatsoever

Bird's...no doubt!

Team USA cant even beat Argentina and some of the Euro teams........the Celtics would kill them.

the celtics wouldnt beat argentina either

usa dumb question

U.S.A. Hands down. Teamwork can only take you so far before a talent disparity of that much takes over. I'd also say USA in 5, 6 max.

Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer; Chris Bosh; Kobe Bryant; Dwight Howard; LeBron James; Jason Kidd; Chris Paul; Tayshaun Prince, Michael Redd , Dwyane Wade and Deron Williams. - This is the USA team, now what you think. Do you really think that the Celtics could handle all this. They barely handle the Hawks, which only had 1 former FIBA player, Joe Johnson. OK Celtics fans get back to reality.

Are we really even having this conversation?!?!

Replace Pau Gasol with Dwight Howard or Lamar Odom with Lebron...and the lakers team themselves could of beat the Celtics...

Why would we even argue about this?!

what an honor for the celtics.. it takes that many stars to beat the celtics..

Depends, do the Celts get to go through the weak east again? And does the USA team have to go through the West? Because that would be the only chance of the Celts pulling something out of there but.

acoffeeaddict, it really doesnt. But since they won it all they are the team that is put into the equation. If the Lakers would have won this topic would read Lakers vs Team USA...

Naahh,... I think the only team that would have a chance against an NBA All-Star Team would have been the 96 BULLS. Admit it. ;) Younger fans won't understand, but those of you who've seen them tell me what you think.

there is no what if scenerio here.. the Celtics won because they are a better team period.. In my humble 10 years of watching basketball i have never seen a team win a championship with one great player...every great players has a wing man, and a team, and that's how championships are won.
If there is a what if scenerio here, it would be like this "if every star plays selfishly, without putting the team first" then the celtics win in 6 ... Rondo 20 points 10 assist. =)

USA

I do not know this would be rather tough. I'd have to agree with nadja22. A team where everybody wants to be a hero, may not be able to actually become a TEAM. Everybody wants to be that star that makes the difference. I am very uncertain as to which way it would go,but i bet you one thing it would be a game i would not miss. Pierce, Allen, K.G, and even the bench would give those boys a run for their money.

Team USA is a team. They have all put aside their egos for the common goal. think about it. isn't garnett an all- star and ray allen and pierce. they all put aside their egos to play so why couldn't team USA

NO! That doesnt even make sense. So PJ Brown is going to stop Chris Bosh? or amare? Rajon is good but he is going to stop Chris Paul? Get real.

What's up with this USA would have to play as a team...first of all they do play as a team if anybody watched them play last summer, and first of all, they have TOO much talent..

Out side of KG, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, who is going to step up? I remind you, the lakers beat them twice...what makes people think a DREAM TEAM couldnt beat them!?

EXACTLY!

i aint gotta answer that we all know whose gonna win by the way that was the stupidest question
