Brandon Jennings and the NBA's age-limit rule

Until a friend mentioned his name to me a couple of weeks ago, I hadn't heard of Brandon Jennings or his unique situation. He is the top point guard of the high school class of 2008, and he recently announced that he would be signing with Pallacanestro Virtus Roma (in Italy) instead of going to play for Lute Olson at Arizona. Jennings has had trouble with the SAT; he failed to become eligible after taking it once, and when his second score was suspiciously higher, the NCAA flagged it and made him take it a third time. It was then (with advice from hoops marketer Sonny Vaccaro) that he started to contemplate the possibility of playing in Europe for a season as an alternative to playing in college. Even before his third test score became public, Jennings announced that he would indeed play overseas next season.

So now, the basketball punditry is predictably on fire debating the merits of the NBA's age-limit rule...

Brandon Jennings is nasty. America is definitely missing out on this kid. College basketball needs to stop working with the NBA to create rules (that don't work), and start competing (i.e. paying players) like the business it is. It's not retaining the best talent, not even remotely, and its product is suffering. Die-hard college hoops fans often respond by hating the NBA, but that's not the answer. The NBA is a symptom, not a problem. The problem is with the NCAA.

i hate the age limit rule the they have! Even though its good to give youger players that extra year to mature I think that part of this rule is to keep older players happy too. Because let face it if guy could still enter the draft right out of high school they would be getting big $$$ and lots of playing time and some of these Vets would be out of a job...

College baseball pales in comparison to NCAA hoops because of the MLB's minor league system. That's really what the NBA needs (draft everyone out of high school and call them up when you think they're ready), but it would hurt college basketball.

I am actually in favor of increasing the age limit. I think thatt hey should make the kids do 2 years in college before going pro.
The "minor league" system would never work for the NBA... No one goes to NBDL league games, and the CBA went bankrupt. No one would go to the games, and the teams would lose money.

it should be the players discretion. they've talked about starting with the next collective bargaining agreement that players can jump from high school but if they choose to go to college they must stay two years.

Brandon Jennings can't spell his own name. He needs education, not to be treated like a bojangling object.

or maybe he should just be an object of entertainment? hell I don't care. !viva italy!

How can it be that there are 15 year olds that deal with the "rigors" of competing in the Olympic but you have to be 18 years old to play in the NBA? There is no logic to this rule other than to protect veteran NBA players and to help the NCAA retain some of its attractivness. The NCAA is a de facto farm system for the NBA - a cheap one at that - and if all the great players - or even so not some great ones - are allowed to increasingly "jump" over the farm system, then it becomes worth less to the NBA. That is why we have an 18 year old rule in the NBA, no other reason.

They have junior olympics. The team USA basketball team that gets the most recognition is the one starring lebron and such where they also have the U18 team which players can choose to try out or to simply pass up the opportunity.

The NBA isn't interested in protecting its veterans, that's the players' association's job. Stern likes an age-limit because it raises the maturity of the game. Only two 18 year-olds in the last decade or so have come in and played well as a rookie - LeBron and KG. The bottom line is that the NBA has a right to set whatever rules it wants to, assuming the players' association is on board.

I think the age limit and Rookie salary limit is sad. They should be able to come out of high school if they wants. Its the dumb ass owners that complained because so many of their scouts suck, and they cant guage real talent. So many great high school stars have came into the league. So dumb.

David Stern should be ousted and so should his rules. If they increase the rule to two years in college then I think we will be seeing a lot more of this. Players will be going to Europe, the thing is they are going to get paid more as well in Europe then they will hear at first. If they are good they could easily pick 5-6 mill a year contracts.

If I was in their shoes I would do the same thing.
