David Thorpe Explains Why He Thinks J.J. Redick Can Be a Starting Shooting Guard for a Playoff Team

Last year, David Thorpe wrote, "I've always believed Redick could become a starter for a playoff team, and he appears to be moving along that path now." I have done several posts disagreeing with Thorpe about this. He recently emailed me and during our exchange of messages I asked him point blank which starting shooting guards in the league he believes that Redick can effectively defend.

I'm with you on this one, Doc. No way can J.J. make it as a starting #2 in the NBA.

Thorpe's horrible.

Benjamin, finally speaking a language that I understand.

JJ Redick
Team Role-Wanker

Redick is a "sixth man" at best. He is a great shooter but this isnt the NCAA anymore. Without a great cast of players around him, he won't ever stand out

Be fair he could totally start and score like 10 a game in the NBDL

JJ Redick sucks. End of sentence. End of conversation.

WNBA maybe. His hay day is over. sooner rather then later day he'll be selling shoes talking about his 4 touchdowns in a single game fr polk high.

Maybe? JJ would mos def be a good starting SG in the WNBA. He would crush 3's with that little ball.

Lol!!! He would deffintily rule the Wnba can he even Dunk~!!! and other +1 WEBKID30

AND BOODALLAS

It's puzzling as to why Orlando even drafted him in the first place. They're certainly not willing to let him show what he can or can't do--they'd be wise to cut ties with them provided some other team would be foolish enough to make a deal for him.

I think he can be good. He has to get even quicker than he is, so that one screen will do. At his height he will have to make up for a lot, but I agree that he can be good. I don't think it will happen, but I wouldn't completely rule it out. Just keep a 5% window that this guy will emerge.

Considering some of the starting off guards in the NBA, I definitely think Redick could develop in the right system. He needs to play with a post player that commands the double team so that he can spot up for open threes. Orlando seems to be a good fit scheme-wise, but Van Gundy has been reluctant to give him minutes, instead featuring Maurice Evans and Keith Bogans at shooting guard.

Redick is a smart player and he'll figure out how to make himself the best defender he can be, assuming the coaching staff is working with him. Has Van Gundy given up on him? If so, it is time for a change of scenery. His ability to shoot the ball still makes him a nice prospect. If Jason Kapono can play significant minutes on a playoff team, then Redick should be able to as well.

I agree!

Jason Kapono is much bigger than Redick, a much better defender and he has a much quicker release on his shot. The fact that Redick seems to be a good fit for Orlando and yet gets virtually no playing time is a pretty good indicator of what his true future prospects are in the NBA--and I seriously doubt that starting for a playoff team is part of that future.

JJ stiniks, he is too small and cant create his own shot! jameer and JJ in the back court< LOL, if i was on the other team i just laugh cus i can put 2 bench guards and have a better back court than those 2 shorties! IT will be so funny to see JJ guard kobe, or even trevor ariza or even jordan farmar.
