Gerald Green is Still Dunking
It seems like only yesterday when a young Gerald Green fresh out of high school was the talk of Summer League when he threw down a monster dunk. He had so much promise and Celtics fans desperately needed something positive to hang on to.
I remember being in the CelticsBlog chat room during the draft and everyone was so excited when Green was still there with the 18th pick. Most had expected him to go in the lottery, but his agent had kept him from working out against other players and many felt that was why he slipped to number 18. Whatever the reason, Celtics fans were thrilled to get him. But then, all that potential never translated to NBA play. He showed flashes, but never any consistency and couldn't seem to put it all together. But we did get bright spots like a monster dunk against the Raptors in a game in Boston. It was the end of a rare blow out victory for the Celtics and Tony Allen put it off the backboard for Gerald to grab and throw through the hoop with his eyes about level with the rim. I still remember all the Raptor fans talking about them getting even with Gerald for hot dogging at the end of the Celtics win. Then, to make matters worse, about a week later they played the Raptors again on and Gerald finished this Celtics win with a windmill dunk. : I still feel that he has a chance to be something special. All that athleticism would make him a formidable player if he could just learn to play defense and get his head on right when he is playing. I like Gerald and hope he does well. He didn't pan out with Minnesota or Houston. Now he is with Dallas and playing for their summer league team. He started out there as he did with the Celtics: with the play of the day. This one started with defense and a steal to set up the dunk. Maybe that is a good sign for him. Although, the box score shows that he still struggles with the game even while making the occasional highlight dunk. He had 12 points on 4-11 shooting with 1 rebound, 1 steal and 6 fouls. Even through he is not a Celtic, I still root for him because he started as a Celtic. When he won the slam dunk contest, Celtics fans desperately needed something to cheer for and He gave us that with the dunk championship. I am pulling for him. I hope he does well with the Mavericks. .
