LeBron James Guarantees Gold; Not a Good Move

A quick cut to the chase. Per the Associated Press:

James made his guarantee in a Time magazine story that hits newsstands Friday. The Cavaliers superstar is featured on one of the covers of the Olympic preview issue.

After comparing the feeling of receiving a gold medal on the podium to opening a prized gift on Christmas morning, James was asked if that meant he would lead the Americans to the title.

"Absolutely," James responded.

Asked if he guaranteed it, he repeated, "Absolutely."

Now we will follow up with some thoughts. One, guarantees are a very dangerous tightrope to walk. If Rasheed Wallace were to guarantee what he was going to have for breakfast the next day, someone would be bound to say something about it. Gilbert Arenas had some lofty expectations during last season's playoffs, and we know what happend there. What James did by guaranteeing a Gold simply laid the gauntlet down to his teammates without their prior knowledge, and anything short of epic prosperity will be ridiculed - and rightfully so.

Look, Lebron James is easily my favorite player in the league. I come to his defense in almost every situation, ranging from his mother rushing the floor to getting cheapshots from Brendan Haywood. However, he has an injured ankle and was on the same team that was an epic failure in the 2004 games. Granted, Larry Brown is no longer here to mess with James' playing time, but who is to say that something drastic doesn't happen? To guarantee something before the games even start?

I'm all for confidence, and frankly as the favorite to win it all, I do think that the U.S. will win the Gold. But to speak for the rest of your team - a team full of All-Stars and world class players that could have their own opinion - in a matter that would promise something that has a chance to not be delivered is a rough move to make.

There are several members of the current team that were there in 2004, and you can bet than they're keeping their thoughts to themselves. If any other member of this team were to "guarantee" anything, there would be some sort of backlash. Alas, I'm fully willing to accept the same for the pride of Cleveland basketball. Feel free to disagree below.

i think you're overreacting, you have guys that know each other well and have committed to play for this team 3 years ago, so they have great chemistry and arent just winging it like in the past. they are better prepared for anything that comes their way and are loaded with shooters, defenders, slashers, w/e i dont think theyre unbeatable per say, but, they are smart players and committed to beat everyone else at their own team style of play.

he needs to guarantee that freaking ankle first.

This team is loaded, if they click then they will not lose a game.

Whether you're an athlete or sportswriter, making predictions and being either rewarded (if you're right) or getting a foot put in your mouth (if you're wrong) is part of the game. No big deal if LeBron's wrong. He just gets to taste a foot, which is hopefully clean.

They will be embarrassed with or without the prediction if they lose again. I am not totally convinced that they will win everything yet, if you think of euro style play all players on their teams can dribble and shoot. I don't think we have even 1 "pure" shooter, the closest would probably be Melo but he needs to be consistent and prove to be an asset on Defense too. As always, it looks like we will have to continue to rely on our athleticism.

I should have said we, WE will be embarrassed again if USA Loses again.

Is Kobe Bryant not a pure shooter? Michael Redd is a pretty pure shooter as well.

by pure shooter I mean like the likes of Larry Bird, Chris Mullin & John Stockton. their games are to recieve the ball in the open area and shoot it with a high percentage.

Kobe is awesome but I'm sure you'll agree that for some reason he shoots better when he is twisting, turning, fading, with the game on the line.

I hope that clarifies what I meant.

now that I think about it yeah Michael Redd is the closest we have to a pure shooter. other examples of pure shooters were John Paxson and Steve Kerr with da Bulls. I think those kind of players are important to team play and euro style have so many of them.. it just worries me a lil' bit.

I do agree with you about the euro style of play though...

Lebron should never speak.

Youre an idiot....
what does it matter either way????
LeBron knows he is on the hands down, most talented team, maybe ever assembled in the history of olympic basketball (nod to '92 us team) but what happens when the US falters justa bit in the world basketball rankings... (see: 2004 olympics) we got 3rd and its was like we got last....
this year China (with all of its talent) says it would be extremely happy finishing top 6....
the USA just owns world basketball (proof would be its 115-4 record all time in the olympics) So it doesn't matter if LeBron promised gold or not.... because its already promised to everyone once anyone puts on a USA jersey...

it wouldve been an actual great team if we had more bigs that can stop teams from gettin offensve rebounds.

iggles422 with the nice fact 115-4 wow that's amazing, i think that kidd being there and facilitating them is gonna help would change a lot for the team and they've also been practicing together for a longer period than forever and now they have size (DWIGHT HOWARD) AND lebron getting realy high percentages from 3 point range (fiba range NOT nba) man they're gonna be good this year, they lost to greece a couple of years ago because of the greece big man who compeltely destroyed them, and now they have boozer, dwight and bosh (possibly chandler) to throw at the european bigs so i think they're gonna be set

AND i'm seeing them play next thursday in macao!!!

i don't think the guarantee is ridiculous at all. i mean, the way the public is judging them, it'll be a failure anyway if they don't get the gold. they might as well go in with confidence.

agreed, if you don't go in with the attitude that you're gonna win why go at all? it just adds a lil more pressure to them. ;)

I'm down with a guarantee....If they can be a TEAM they should put up points like the early 90's teams did

Gold teeth?

i like the guarantee myself personally the rest of the world already hates us so why not try to get them a lil hostile. Plus when the Olympics start this year we will have a full team not a bunch of second chocies like in 04. Lebron will dominate.
