ROY stands for……Rook……uh, ALL STAR

Not since 2001 has a Trailblazer been elected to the NBA All-Star game. WOW, I bet you that Baron Davis is pretty mad right about now, but I have to tell you that the coaches in the West recognize what a true all star is. In only his 2nd year, Brandon Roy has emerged as who we thought he was when we first saw him in a Blazer uniform. I always knew that he had the type of talent you need to have in order to be considered as an all-star, I just didn't think it was going to be this soon. Right now, the Blazers are an extremely young team that needs to have a veteran leader â€" Roy is that leader even though he is not a true seasoned vet. Unlike Zach Randolph (Knicks vs. Blazer tonight) Roy understands that he doesn't have to be only a scorer. Zach feels at times that he is out of the game when he doesn't get his 20 Points 10 rebounds; he hasn't yet mastered the other parts of the game yet. I'm so glad Zach is not in Portland for the one reason is that the Chemistry we have today would have not been possible with Zach on the team.. Roy is a rock the whole team can lean on, in fact I believe that is what makes him stronger. Roy is a person/player who brings people together not the kind that is decisive. Let's see what my trusty prediction sheet has ……….it looks like I'm predicting a win tonight. I still think Portland will be the better team tonight, but this is the NBA and you never know who will catch fire and sink another team. If Portland is to make the playoffs, they will have to improve at almost every offensive part of the game and learn how to play lock-down team defense during the last part of every quarter.

X Factor for tonight's game â€" James Jones and Martell Webster need to increase the output from the 2 position to 24 combined points and 8 rebounds. Keep Pryz in during the defensive part of crunch times. Keep shooting the ball â€" get some fast breaks and allow mar. All Star to make his mark.

Not to take anything away from Roy, but he's not an all-star this year. I think it's unfair that the Blazers coach called all of the west coaches and told them to pick Roy as an all-star. If you have to do that, then you are not a all-star. Also, whats with the I-Roy? Thats a desperate way of making the list. And as much as I dis-like the Warriors, I think Baron Davis should of made it over Roy. Baron is a better player, and he should of been rewarded because he normally can't make it a couple of weeks with out getting injured and he's played everygame and has done pretty well. Roy should of been snubbed.

Hey, I understand your argument. I have seen some 4th quarter statistics, but I have to go and find them again. I think Roy has better crunch time #'s and seems to be a far better team leader than Davis. All I'm saying is that I'm happy that the coaches saw that there was a "team 1st" guy waiting for his chance. Imagine how much better the league would be if people believed in the team concept.

Youre out of your mind mickey. Dont ever call yourself a Blazer fan again. The warriors were in and won a playoff series their success is to be expected but B-ROY on the other hand lost a 20 and 10 guy(albeit Zach) put the team on his shoulders and led the squad to a great year so far. Did you think that without ODEN anyone would be talking about the Blazers right now? As far as the talking to coaches thing goes, don't be naive coaches talk allll the time. And an ipod, who cares, it's not a bribe. It's just letting people see what our boy is doing. We're small market and not alot of people see what goes on in Portland or Oregon for that matter. Those guys can afford an ipod but they wouldn't know how to turn it on! Great write up Jasonball I agree with ya esspecially on the X factor tonight. I might have to go and hit up a scalper for some cheap tix

It has nothing to do with being a Blazers fan or a Warriors fan. I don't like the Warriors, and I'm not a fan of the Blazers, but don't mind them. I just don't think it's fair that Mr. Nate had to call everyone and tell them to vote for Roy. I like Roy, he's amazing, but it's his second year and he will have plenty of other years to be a all-star when there will be without doubt that he is.

Fair? Not the best word to use in the world of the NBA. Fair is using every legal means to do what is best to help your team grow towards a championship. Period.

Making the all-star team and having your coach campain for you is not considered a method to grow your team to make them a champship contender. Look, I know only Blazers fans are going to reply to this. Roy is great. Roy is a all-star 95% percent of any other year, but this year, there have been many great players. One of them happen to be Baron Davis. I don't like Baron at all, but no other coaches call "Every Coach" and tell them to Vote for their player. Thats just not right in my opinion. Coaches should vote based on what they have observed and the Best player.

"Making the all-star team and having your coach campain for you is not considered a method to grow your team to make them a champship contender."

Wrong.

Portland is not sunny and warm. It does not have a nightlife. It is quiet, quirky, polite, and wet. Every ounce of positive public perception it can garner settles into the unconscious of the big name free agent. The Blazers will have cap room in two years, much cap room, to pursue a big name. Roy as an all-star this year will set into motion the idea that athletes can flourish in Portland. This idea, coupled with Oden's debut, and a winning record will bring about the idea that Portland is also set to pursue and contend a championship. The big name free agent could be the final piece Portland needs, and this All-Star year could be one of the unsung factors. Portland needs every shred of achievement to pull it all together.

Also, I am going to go ahead and guess that most coaches do this for their players who are on the margin of such recognition (including the all-pro lists at the end of the year). Perhaps Baron should have had such dedicated endorsement. If he didn't, what does that tell you?

I was under the impression that most organizations call whoever they can to get the word out about voting for their players? I don't think what Nate did was unfair. It was unfair that BD wont be an all-star this year because he no doubt deserves to be, but is that Coach Nates fault? I can't in any way see how it could be. Roy is most definitely an all-star this year, no question about it. He is Portland's leader. He deserves it.

Blame all the A.I. fans out there. Baron should have made it, no doubt. But it's B-ROYS time now. God I cant stand Iverson.

The iroy was sent to the coachs to shwo off roy becuase being in portland we are not seen by alot of peeps very often it was in now way a bribe or anything like that it was just a hey dont forget to look a b-roy type of thing. anfd you say roys not an all star this year well you cant say that now u can he you dotn think he should be one but u cant sya he isent cuz he is plain and simple. congrates b-roy you deserve it

I disagree that Davis should go over Roy, I think people are misunderstanding the point of the Allstar game. If the NBA held the Allstar game exclusively for the fans just because they wanted the fans to be happy, choosing a select few from each team (and snubbing the majority of the players) is a piss poor way to do it. Inevitably some fans are going to be so upset by their team's snub, that they will blog about their horrible misfortune.
Really, the Allstar game is only partially held for the fans to be proud of their team's selection(s). It is largely a marketing event to create new legions of fans. For that reason, I agree with the selection of Roy over Davis because (in stark contrast to Roy) Davis is aging and has a history of pouting and quitting on his teams. If you were David Stern, who would you want your new fans rooting for? If you were a coach, would you choose the pouting quitter or the eager team-first overachiever?
That said, it is really all moot because I don't think that "Roy over Davis" was really how the decision was made. Roy is an off guard not a true point. It was really Nash, Paul and AI over Davis. (or AI over Davis)
