Serious talks: Phoenix Suns want Shaq Daddy

Shawn Marion and his expiring contract for a Hall of Fame center and his expiring knees? Shaq and his peoples have reportedly been told that he should prepare himself for a trade. Talks are "serious and ongoing" but nothing is a done deal. Suns PG Marcus Banks has been mentioned alongside Marion, and the Dallas Mavericks are also reportedly a possibility for Miami's man in the middle.

The freed-up cap space would allow the Heat to target any number of high-profile free agents following this season, including Baron Davis, Gilbert Arenas, Elton Brand, Antawn Jamison, Ron Artest and Corey Maggette.

MIAMI LETS GET GET GET RID OF SHAQ DADDY FO REAL HE GOTS TO GO MARION WE WELCOME YOU WITH OPEN ARMS

AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! No No No the last thing the Suns need is that geriatric fool. This would be a disaster please please please say it aint so. First of all Shaq can't run therefore he cant play for the suns. second of all Marion is a great all around player. can defend from point guard to power forward, rebounds, great help defender, shoots the three runs the break. Shaq dunks....when he can move enough to even play. please just leave the Suns alone and let them play

I agree with you 100%. Suns are a damn good team where they're at now. Add Shaq to the mix and ummm yea... they won't be so good. Shit look at Miami now!

But I am a Nuggets fan so that change may be good for the west.

Sarver also promised no trades so hopefully this is a bunch of bull

main point is shaq wont be able to run with the suns... plus he is terrible.

D-WADE AND SHAWN MARION SOUNDS GOOD TO ME BUT I SAY DUMP SHAQ TO WHOEVER WILL TAKE HIM

Heck...if he was healthy, I'd say send his bad ass down to Dallas for the rest of this year, but I am not sure it would be worth it in the long run.

How is Shaq going to run with the Suns? Seems like an odd trade. But I'm way more of a Miami fan than a Suns fan. So I'll take it! :]

the crazy thing is that Marion/Banks actually works salary-wise - who'dathunkit?

Yes, but who wants an aging center who can't stay healthy anymore. I don't think Shaq has the motivation and way too much money to worry about working hard to win another title.

I agree Madalyn. That big guy will run out of gas with the tempo the Suns run; I just don't see it.

im a lifetime shaq fan. hes my favorite player of all time. but during last season, i decided that he simply doesnt have IT any more. the magic is gone. its time to move on. come on marion. bring it on.

its gonna be bittersweet if and when this trade goes through b/c i really dont wanna see shaq part ways with wade and miami, but im excited to get a younger, better, more athletic player in marion.

I know it's all over ESPN, but I'm just having a hard time believing the Suns would actually go through with this trade. Shaq doesn't have Suns legs, and you need them to play with Phoenix. AND He is too far along in his career to acquire Suns legs. I respect Shaq and everything he has done with this career but this would be the worst trade ever. I would be so disappointed. Trix needs to stay in Phoenix, Shaq can stay in Miami.

This will be very interesting if it goes through, and I've heard that Shaq is due for a physical tomorrow in Phoenix.

If Shaq does go there, then I think that they might actually change offensive philosophies midseason(probably not a good idea) and run in a halfcourt set. With Shaq and Amare in the paint and Nash running the show, they could be VERY successful doing so, but it would be a huge change... one you would expect to see over an off-season, not in the middle of a season.

I OFFICIALLY HATE STEVE KERR! He's only been with the suns this year and he is going to ruin them. WOW! PLEASE FIRE HIM! AND DON'T TRADE FOR SHAQ...HE needs to retire cus his thigh cant handle the uptempo style! DAMMIT! FUCK STEVE KERR AND SHAQ!

Here's an update: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3232862

This deal doesn't make much sense for financial or basketball reasons, but Marion has been an ass to the rest of the team and Shaq... well, he's Shaq. People love him, and if this improves clubhouse chemistry, then I'm in favor of rolling the dice.

Thanks for the link. :)

And here is the best post I've seen on the trade yet: http://freedarko.blogspot.com/2008/02/they-arent-who-we-thought-we-were.html

Wow. Just wow.

I agree with Kerr that the Suns' style is not championship-style basketball. The bottom line is that you need to play good defense to win rings - and that includes post D and getting defensive boards to finish th defensive stand - but Shaq's not the right answer.

Yeah, Pau looked really good tonight with the Lakers, and that team should be a force. But you don't blow up this team for a 35-year-old gimpy Shaq.

Wow.

If Shaq was healthy, that would be a heck of a front line in Phoenix with him and Amare Stoudamire. I tend to agree with most people that he is not going to be able to play in that running style of offense though. He's way too slow getting down the floor.

Amare Stoudamire is about to D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E!!!!!!

I love this trade.

February 20th -- mark it down -- Suns-Lakers, ESPN, 6pm pacific. They don't play again this season.

Not sure Shaq is gonna be fit by then but if so, that should be a great game.

Suns would be crazy........But great to hear if your a Miami fan!!!

I'm not too sure this is going to help the Suns though i would like to be surprised and see Shaq started beasting again but I just dont think he can run n gun with nash and co

with an actual center amare could play power forward and be a lot more effective... however shaq can't keep up with this team, i'm okay with trading marion since he will not be back next year anyway but we need to get someone with a little bit of athleticism and not just a run down big man

I agree with that.

HAHAHAaa....u get a point deducted for agreeing with the statement above ...yet the guy who said it gets a point..........somebodys on yer ass

I've watched Shaq courtside for the past 4 years...and all I can tell fans of Phoenix is be happy if you get him. Shaq's not done. He STILL commands 2-3 players covering him. In Phoenix, teams are going have to play Shaq staight up. If the do, he can score at will. If not this year, next year Phoenix would win it all....with Shaq in the middle and Amare at PF.

The Heat suck so much at this point that it's a laugher- yet tearful- to watch them, night after night, lose to the worst teams who are feasting on them relentlessly. The newly acquired Ricky Davis can't buy a basket, Mark Blount is potentially good but too erratic to lift the team, Dwyane Wade is seemingly listless at times, you wonder what's going on in addition to his so far non-recovery from that shoulder separation, Daequon Cook should really be in an experimental league at this stage of his career, and Shaq has completely had it - his bulk and poor diet simply cannot sustain the toll of 14 seasons. The reported trade for Shawn Marion makes absolute sense for the Heat - and just might provide a better fit for Shaq in Phoenix. Marion will score points plus he has teemndous drive - so desperately needed by the Heat with one of the worst scoring averages in the league, and among the most lethargic.

Shaq to Phoenix Confirmed: Diesel Deleted From D-Wade's Five

The idea of Shaq running the break with Nash has many league officials scratching their heads, though chances are Shaq's glacial mobility and inability to defend will force him to sit out critical stretches late in the game, allowing Nash to operate unburdened of 360 lbs of rapidly decaying skills.

http://www.sportsmansdaily.com/Shaq_to_Phoenix_Confirmed.html

Shaq Daddy and mini-Shaq Amare in the paint? Are you kidding me! You are talking necessary double teams and open perimeter for play maker Steve Nash. Amare can now be the power forward he was meant to be and Phoenix finally has their big man. Shaq has brought championship rings to every one of his teams, no matter where he has played with the exception of Orlando. Miami fans are quick to forget they got their rings because of the "Diesel"! This will put life back into Superman and he will get Phoenix their ring. The tempo slows during the playoffs, especially against the Spurs which the Suns must always face - this is their answer against Duncan and Dirk! This is a great deal, and Miami fans didn't do to bad in getting Marion. At least Phoenix can now get their chemistry together and quit listening to him whine about recognition.

I agree that Amare needs to move to the power forward spot, and that his outside shot is developing. But Shaq's effective in the low post WITH THE BALL. He'll clog up the paint and create more of a crowd for STAT. Amare needs a bruising center who focuses on defense and rebounding. Two things that Shaq has never had a hunger to do.

The money play for the Suns is a mid-to-high pick and roll with Amare and Nash - with two players outside the three point line and a guy like Marion half leaking in for a rebound or follow up. If Shaq makes it up court for the offensive set, he'll be planted near the paint and compact the defense down .
I just don't get it. Gasol would have been a better fit.

If Shaq can get back into his '04 shape when he first joined the Heat (and came within one Dwayne Wade rib injury of a championship), the Suns may be able to ELBOW past those Spurs.

Amare and Shaq in the front court spells trouble for other Western conference teams come playoff time. That's a lot of strength.

I'm not sure if this was the best move for the Suns. Although I am and always will be a huge Shaq fan I must say that this may not play out the way the Suns want it to. Shaq has indured alot of inquires in the past few years and that will be the determining factor in whether or not he can run and gun with this team and right now he is scoring at a low percentage. But with all of this, I still think his veteran leadership will make a difference.

If Shaq can run the floor with the suns, then they will be a tough team to beat... But whenever Bynum comes back, the Lakers are definitely the most dominant team in the West....

I was waiting for Steve Kerr to do something that proves he doesn't know what he is doing as a GM. The guy wants to make a trade so her can get credit for landing a star. Kerr fails.

This is a bad move by the Suns Marion was their best rebounder and defender trading for the Shaq of now who will only give you about 20 minutes a game. He doesnt fit their style with Nash as the point guard a much better deal for the suns to have made would have been to try to get Jermaine O'neal. This is one of the worst trade moves i have seen in awhile taking on shaq's 20mill. a year contract. Alot of people are gonna say well Marion could have been a free agent yeah but the suns could have given Marion less then 20 mill. a year and kept him. Miami will improve and i wouldnt be totally shocked if they did make the playoffs in a terrible eastern conference. Lakers fans should thank the suns for making such a huge mistake. Suns lose in first round of playoffs

Whaaaat, people still want Shaq?

I'm still waiting for Kazaam part 2!

No thats the thing missmara.. Nobody does... lol

Thats why the heat are trying to get rid of him... And Stever Kerr is the only one dumb enough to go after him.. I know Shaq was good whenever kerr was in the league, but I think I make my point seeing how that was what like 8 9 years ago...

whatever. spurs will win anyway no matter what team against them

They may be beatable now if Shaq is healthy enough for the playoffs. Shaq and Stoudamire against Duncan? Classic.

Yea good ole spurs who are on a nice spiral downward!!! And Miami was a good team whenever Shaq went there... Miami could have gotten a different big man and won the championship... Shaq has to go to a team that is already stacked or he would not win a championship...

I might be in the minority, but I think this is a good move by the Suns.

PHX in '08!
