Sixers deal Carney, Booth to clear salary for Brand or Smith

According to Yahoo Sports, the Sixers have made an interesting trade that helps clear cap space to sign a big-time free agent. The trade can't be announced until tomorrow, but the Sixers have agreed to trade Rodney Carney, Calvin Booth and a future 1st round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a 2.8 million dollar trade exception.

While this trade looks extremely lopsided on paper, and giving up a first round pick is never a good thing, the Sixers have now positioned themselves to make a serious run at one of the two big free agents out there, Elton Brand or Josh Smith. The trade clears up an extra two million dollars that can then be built into a salary offer for either player.

It has been speculated that Brand was going to go back to Los Angeles to team up with the newest Clipper, Baron Davis, but as more time passes, the Sixers have gotten increasingly aggressive in going after Brand. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Sixers are a "serious threat" to lure Brand out of Los Angeles. The Sixers initially didn't think they could compete financially but with the trade they are right in the mix.

Elton Brand is probably Plan A, making Josh Smith, who visited the Sixers last week, Plan B.

Sixers fans, would you rather have Elton Brand or Josh Smith?

MINNESOTA NOW HAS A DIAMOND IN THA ROUGH WITH RODNEY CARNEY! PHILLY JUS HASNT GIVIN HIM ENOUGH MINUTES. HIS SENIOR YEAR FINISHED SECOND BEHIND J.J. REDDICK IN 3 MADE AND 3PT % NOT TO MENTION HE'S JUMPIN OUT THA GYM AS A PHENOMANAL DUNKER

i do not like moving carney, should have moved willie green hes an absolute bum!!!! hope we get brand tho it will def help our half court offense.

NOT A SIXERS FAN BUT I WOULD WANT JOSH SMITH WHO'S YOUNGER AND MORE ATHLETIC THAN BRAND. NOT TO MENTION I DONT THINK BRAND WILL EVER BE THE PLAYER HE WAS AFTER THE INJURY

take smith he's younger and has alot more left in the tank then brand... lets face it GET UP AND "RUN WITH US"

I think Smith Fits into our System better as a defensive player, and he can jump out of the gym just like Carney could. He is a future All-Star and is only 22. However if you want to win now and assuming Brand is back to himself then I would go with Brand. He gives us a half court offense and will take a ton of preasure off of other players like Iggy. Booth never plays so no loss there. Either way one of them is going to end up as a 76er next year and that is exciting. There is no way that Atlanta can match 14-15 million......Also for some reason they want to go in the trade direction. It is rumored that the Pistons are shopping Wallace and his contract happens to be 15 Million which the 76ers now can pay. Everyone knows that Cheeks and Wallace are great friends so it is not that far fetched. Can't wait to see what happens!!!

It's all about dollars. I'd take a healthy Brand over an overpaid Smith, but I'd take Smith at 11 mil over Brand at 15-16. The worst thing we could do is to throw the Brand money all at Smith and way overpay for him just to keep Atlanta from interfering. I've said this before, but the next two FA classes are much better than this one. Smith in either of these upcoming classes could never command the kind of dollars we're thinking about throwing his way.

I said it before and I will say it again we need to take smith over brand. brands knee is still a question mark as we are a running team, (remember Mcnabb) brand is a half court player (we are a runing team) I dont see where this guy fits now smith on the other hand can flat out run, jump, and block plus he can give you the 15points a game that brand will give you

yea anyone would want josh smith why trade carney hes practically iguodala

JOSH SMITH BRAND GETS INJURED TOO MUCH AND HE IS OLD

brand would give them that sought after low post presence but i doubt they get him....he also has a history of injuries so i dont know how he will play this year...although josh smith wont immediatley put them over the top he will be a step toward improving vastly

But would you pay 15 mil for Smith next season? That could be what it costs, and that's ridiculous.

no i wouldnt...i personally dont care because im a miami heat fan but the sixers are kind of a wild franchise with the questionable things they do

this is great for the sixers think about this starting lineup for next year
pg- Andre Miller
sg- Willie Green
sf- Andre Iguodala
pf- Elton Brand
c- Samual Dalmbert

Sixers made a risky move with brand, but we will have to see. I think Brand would have been better of with the Warriors, but they might be better with Maggette. The T-Wolves have a pretty good future under their belt with Carney, Love and the rest of the young crew.

The 76ers have a better future than the twolves. Rodney Carney will not be good in the future he never had progress when he was with philly so i dont see him doing any good with the twolves. The sixers have a great young bench like lou willilams and thaddeus young and a few others. This team will be a really big contender this year and will make it into the playoffs i still dont see them being a nba finals contender but the sixers are very close. I still think they need one more piece to the puzzle to make them a finals contender. I think they can do better than willie green at sg. But watch out for the sixers cuz they are back

This was a great move for the Wolves. The 76ers sent cash along to pay for Booth's contract and all but 1/3 of Carney's so the Wolves are basically taking a flying on Rodney for nothing. Plus they only give up the second rounder if they are one of the best five teams in the NBA next season.
