Spurs Take Game 1

Tim Duncan scored 40 points and added 14 assists, with teammate Manu Ginobili scoring the deciding shot in double overtime in San Antonio's 117-115 home win over the Phoenix Suns.

The Spurs, defending NBA champions, take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, a rematch of a heated battle in last year's postseason. The next game will be Tuesday night in San Antonio.

Ginobili scored eight of his 24 points in the second overtime period. Tony Parker had 26 points for the Spurs, while Michael

Finley hit a pair of clutch three-pointers near the end of regulation to help the Spurs force overtime.

San Antonio trailed most of the game, by as many as 16 points, taking its first lead with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Victoria native Steve Nash had 25 assists and 13 assist for the Suns.

Nash made a three-pointer from the corner to tie the game at 115, but Ginobili drove through the Phoenix lane for the winning shot with under two seconds left.

Amare Stoudemire was a force for Phoenix with 33 points. In his playoff debut with the Suns, Shaquille O'Neal helped create room for Stoudemire and contributed 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks.

"We had a lot of opportunities to win," O'Neal said. "You can't make mistakes against a team like that especially here in this building."

While the Spurs briefly held the lead late in the fourth, they were down 93-90 with 1:10 to go after Leandro Barbosa's fast-break layup.

Finley hit his three-pointer with 15 seconds left to force overtime.

Nash scored seven points to begin the first overtime for the Suns, but Duncan helped San Antonio claw back, with Stoudemire taking a crucial offensive foul for charging.

Duncan drained a three-pointer, his first of the playoffs, with three seconds left to send the game into a second extra period.

"I didn't know what was going to happen, honestly," Duncan said. "Manu turned the corner, Shaq just totally leaves me and stayed with Manu."

With the Spurs leading by two with just over a minute left in double overtime, Nash missed a three-pointer and Boris Diaw couldn't convert a layup on successive possessions.

Nash hit for three on Phoenix's last gasp, but Ginobili soon responded.

Last year's series between the clubs was a pitched battle. After San Antonio's Robert Horry fouled Nash hard in Game 4, a melee led to suspensions for Stoudemire and Boris Diaw. San Antonio wrapped up the series in six games.

The Spurs won four championships between 1999 and 2007, but have never won in successive seasons.

A story from the CBC? Jeez. You know they don't care much for basketball up there! Now, if this were about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, then that would be another story. ;-)

I caught the end of this game. It was a great game. It seemed like the champs wanted to remind everyone why they are the champs. When a seven-footer nails a trey to send it to double OT, you know it's your day. Granted, Duncan's a great player, but most teams will let the big man take that shot.

By the way, as an aside, the atmosphere at that game is a big reason as to why I prefer college ball (or even Euro ball; I saw some excellent games when I was over in Spain) to the NBA. All of these bells and whistles, strobe lights, pumped-in canned noise/sound effects; this all happened(s) DURING THE PLAY! Now, I like the DE-FENCE! chant, and don't mind the canned noise on that one, but when they start playing music when the home team has the ball and is trying to run the offense, I have some issues with that. Perhaps it's just because I'm a Celtics fan; a fan of the last holdout from the dance team trend (and I don't even have any problems with the dance team!). The Celtics stand for tradition and for actual crowd energy, so I guess I am expressing my belief in that ideal. :-D

Yeah, I think the Spurs could have given up easily multiple times, but they really proved themselves.
OH! and I have to say, I'm going for Boston in the east, so hopefully our teams will meet in the finals!

and I agree about NBA crowds, they're extremely dull and the way the arenas do it is rediculous. But I live in Portland and I think the energy is pretty good in the Rose Garden.

I despise the way NBA crowds have been dumbed down too. That being said, can you PLEASE find a way not to inject a side comment about how great Boston is in a discussion of a classic NBA game. PLEASE.

Dude, I don't see how what I said takes away from the game. I just made an observation. When people state that they think something is amiss, they would be best served to offer an alternative. So I did. And I explained the rationale. So I can't offer any suggestions just because I'm a Celtics fan? Okay. Good to know. I'll keep that in mind. :-D

Somebody didn't have his Froot Loops this morning, eh? ;-)

The Celtics fan is just louder in comparison with recent years, when there was nothing to cheer about. The loudest crowds in the league I can think of:
1) New York when they're good
2) Golden State
3) Utah
4) Lakerland
5) Boston

Dallas, Golden State, Portland and San Antonio crowds aren't afraid to make noise.

Never been to a Laker game, but I'll be down their next season... can't wait to see how
THAT crowd holds up to the names I mentioned earlier. Pretty loud crowd? I hope so. I hate sleepers!

I was down in Phoenix a few weeks ago, what a quiet crowd! Seriously.
Not much enthusiasm as a group. And it was a damn good game.

I just don't understand how you could be quiet during a basketball game. That is just wrong.

For real. It's something I will never understand either.
You should see some of the looks I get! Maybe I'm just obnoxious at games, but hey...it's fun.

How does Duncan shoot a 3, yet alone make it?

I'm a Suns fan until the day I die...but when Duncan made that three...all I could do was laugh.
I couldn't even force myself to be mad, that was just ...... yea, ouch. That game hurt.

Wasn't that the 1st he made this year?

Yes it was. Go figure!

That's why they pay Duncan the big bucks. I have seen him make 3's before. He doesn't shoot them too often, but he got one when it counted.

It was actually the first three I have ever seen Duncan make.

I've been watching basketball for a long time, but I don't watch the Spurs unless I have to.
No offense to the team, they just don't excite me all that much.

Appearantly he practices 3s more than any other big man in the league. But even he said it was luck. :]

Game of the season, no doubt about it

Definitely. (So far at least)

yeah game 1 was game of the season but wait til game 2

Can't just write off the NBA champs. They are the champs for a reason. I think they are going to knock Phoenix out of it.
