Tonsils

Saturday i got my tonsils out. It was a surgery that i needed to get done. If i did so i wouldn't have any problem with my tonsils during the season. I usually have like 4 or 5 sore throats a year. At the end of last season i had the worst one yet. i couldn't even swallow water, it hurt to breathe out of my mouth and i lost like 15 pounds. Most of my sore throats got to the point where i couldn't swallow water without having pain. I look crazy when i go out to a restaurant and drink water and tense up every time i take a drink or eat something. The surgery went fine. it was early saturday morning. It was like a 45 minute surgery. They put the stuff in my IV to make me go to sleep and i was just laying there on the table. The next thing i remember was in one of the hospital beds saying when we gonna get started, but it was already over. It was very painless. I was rushing to get out of the hospital and get back to the hotel. When i got there, the first thing i did was turn the air to cold and then get in bed. I passed out sitting up, i was in that position for like 5 hours until i woke up. The first night wasn't even that bad. If i felt any pain, then i'd take some medicine which was in liquid form. The little pain that i did have would go away just like that. I actually ate kraft mac and cheese that night. The next night when i woke up i had a puddle of blood where i was sleeping. It was in the spot where my puddle of slobber is usually at. I had to gargle with cold water which would stop the bleeding. To keep my weight up I'm actually drinking protein shakes with my meals. On the second day i shouldn't of because my stomach was feeling weak just from the little bit of food i had but i forced down the protein shake which sent me over. I got sick. I didn't even make it to the toilet -- just to the sink. It was mac and cheese, ugh it was nasty but i felt better. Other than those incidents i've been doing pretty well. My throat gets sore and dry and i can feel the scab now but when i take my medicine I'm usually fine. Hopefully they let me go home with my mom because they usually want you to stay for 2 weeks, but im doing good and its gonna suck being out here by myself in a hotel room all day.

fwiw I would do the same for B Roy or LMA!

lmao!

Wait a tick, if you wanted to "massage his tonsils"... that means you would practically be strangling the man. Holy crap.

Ouch! Sorry that you're not 100%. There is a bright side, at least you can talk to us more! GET BETTER BIG MAN! PEACE.

G.O.,
Many happy returns, man. I'm really excited for you and the team. Just rest, rest, rest.
It blows about your tonsils, but better now than later, huh? This season is gonna be really cool for you, I can feel it. Stay positive and take good care.

Greg,

I am happy that the surgery went well! Just chill for a while and play Playstation. Take your time and come back 100%. By the way, you may wanna keep a small bucket by your bed :)

Later.

Hey man I had the same thing happen last spring after the first week you feel fine, hope you feel better man.

Your tonsils got Odenated. It's got to be sweet knowing all those sore throats are a thing of the past. Soak up that precious rest time my good man :)

Kraft Mac and Cheese is one of the greatest meals ever made. Disappointing to hear that you couldn't keep it down. I hope you don't rule it out in the future.

you'll be fine Greg... same sort of thing happened to me about seven years ago

go home. go stay with your mom. nothing like the care of your mother in the time of a health related need.

Greg, nice and graphic! There could be kids on here! I got sick just thinking about a sink full of half-digested mac and cheese... Actually, I hope that is what coaches start feeling like before they come to the Rose Garden. Get well soon my man,
Dan
P.S. Is that really your myspace page? If so, you are tops on my friends list...

You'll be feeling way better before you know it. Glad to hear everything came out ok!

Those tonsils were evil, GODE. Evil!

2 weeks is a long time but at least you can finally chill out for awhile. Seems like you've been all over the place the last couple month.

Greg, take it from a native Oregonian: try to find Umpqua Dairy ice cream. The cartons are red with blue lids and have a Native American guy on them. It's from Southern Oregon (where I grew up) and it's still the best ice cream I've had in the whole country. Fred Meyer has it, usually.
Just a helpful tip:) Get well soon, big fella.

No way... You gotta try the Tillamook ice cream. Brown cow or peanut butter and chocolate flavors are the best!

Both brands are excellent!

I'm glad you are getting some rest. Sorry you're stuck in a hotel room, though. Eat that ice cream. Then eat more ice cream.

Hope you heal up quick.

That incident with the Mac N Cheese sounds kinda scary. I had something like that happen to me when I was a kid and couldn't eat the food I had thrown up for like 10 years.

This is the first time I've ever heard the gruesome details of a professional athlete blowing chunks. I LOVE THE INTERNET. Thanks Greg.

Greg, great comment on the puddle of blood! Funny stuff. Nothing like wakin up to a puddle after a power nap!

If that happened with Mac and cheese, imagine what Applebees' food would have looked like!

Glad to hear everything went well. So do you miss the rest of the Summer League?

Take care of yourself, GO. We all love you out here in Portland and want you to be healthy. And, by the way, its not all about the basketball. Stay true to yourself and keep centered in that big heart of yours. Don't ever let all the hype and pressure to save the Blazers take you away from your love of the game. If you become a star doing what you love, its icing on the cake. But its just the icing. The cake is doing what you love. All the best from all of us to you.

Hey Greg!

I read on a Blaze board you were seen in a Riteaid with your mom buying a popsicle, but it sound like it was true if you've been stuck in a hotel room.

At any rate, glad you are getting better and especially glad you are pretty much pain free.

When you say 'home' do you mean back east? Are you buying a home here in the Portland area?

Michael

Ooops, that should have been 'wasn't true'.

Glad you're feeling better Greg! - We're so pumped to have you here playing in Portland!

Greg...I had my wisdom teeth pulled a few years back...they were impacted(sideways under the gums)...I was awake and there was a lot of tugging and CHIPPING going on but I was totally out of it(laughing gas)...they sent me home with Percocet which is a step above Vicodin...I took two and sat in front of the tv for 3 hours and I had no ability to look away...I think I blinked once:/
Glad to hear to kicked those tonsils to the curb like a champ...Now get home and get some of you mom's cooking!:) Peace.

Trust me...buy a PS3 and get NCAA Football 2008. It'll make the 2 weeks fly by. What kind of protein shakes are you drinking? Did you know you can order the Gatorade shakes that you guys got at OSU? We get them out here in Arizona too. I bought some to have in my dorm haha. Get better man. Take it easy.

ps - are goldfish good or bad for your throat right now? Hahaha you should try and get an endorsement with Pepperidge Farm.

NCAA Football 2008 is sick! I just got it today and i can't stop playing. so much fun

Greg... You are really an exceptional person! I hope you never lose your zest for living - even the "sore" parts! I can't wait to see you back out on the court. Take care of yourself.

What? You're staying in a hotel in Portland? When are you going to go house hunting?

Greg, I lived in Portland for ten years and I think you will love it. I got sick in my throat and neck a lot the first couple of years. Solution ... turtlenecks. Keep your neck warm and have a great season. I'm getting NBA league pass this year just to watch you and LMA.

Greg Oden in a turtleneck and jorts would be rockin

do they make hospital beds to fit 7 foot people?

Greg,
Thanks for the update. If you get outside you will notice that the temperature is nice and cool, and we had some rain today. Someday, after you have lived here for many years, you will appreciate it when it rains after a long stretch of sunny days. We moved here 10 years ago from the East Coast. We have come to like it when it rains. When you reach that point, you will be a true Oregonian! I hope you have the chance to enjoy the summer in Oregon before the really hard work starts of getting ready for the NBA season.
Best wishes,
Mark

Sounds like a very good thing that you got those tonsils done. Get better fast, man. I was just thinking how I should try to find some archive on the 'Net of some old Blazers playoffs games with Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Buck, and the boys - so you could see how crazy the fans get when the team goes deep into the playoffs. It was awesome. Peace, Dave

I heard that Greg isn't going to buy a house. He'd rather rent - he doesn't want to be house poor.

So, you mean he is taking homebuying advice from Scottie Pippen?

I am glad that you are attending to your health. As a health professional it is imperative to take care of any health probably prior to the season so that we don't have any issues. Take a breather and get some rest! Use this time to mediate on the game and the goodness of God that way you will not be too bored!!! Happy Healing!!!!

Mr. Tonsils, you ROCK!!!
You are not alone in your room.
You have the Blazer Mainia squad with ya here.
I dought that there are any NBA players with a blog that is so real.

Of course, if you did get the tonsil surgery, you would not have any problem with them (they'd be in a jar in your den).
