DJ Steward is coming off a year where he played 28 G League regular season games and averaged 12.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per contest while shooting 45.8% from the field and 40.9% from the three-point range (he also appeared in 17 Showcase Cup games and one playoff game).
The 21-year-old has been a free agent, and (on Saturday night) ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that he will sign with the Boston Celtics.
Via Wojnarowski : "Former Duke guard DJ Steward has agreed on a training camp deal with the Boston Celtics, sources tell ESPN. He’ll compete for a two-way contract."
Steward initially went undrafted in 2021 after one season of college basketball with Duke University.
The former McDonald's All-American averaged 13.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per contest while shooting 42.6% from the field and 34.1% from the three-point range.
Since Steward is still so young, he could be an excellent addition to the roster on a two-way contract.
Even if he does not get a two-way spot, Stewart could end up playing for the Celtics' G League team (since his deal is for training camp).
As for the Celtics, they are one of the best teams in the NBA and coming off a year where they were the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
They beat the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers in the first two rounds of the playoffs but lost to the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the Conference Finals.
The franchise made the NBA Finals in 2022 and has been to the Conference Finals five times in the previous seven seasons.
