After dropping Game 1 of their postseason matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves, 117-95, on Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers look to even the score. The two teams will face off in Game 2 of their opening-round matchup on Tuesday in L.A.
According to Los Angeles head coach JJ Redick, who spoke with the media on Monday after a practice session, the Lakers' key to success is matching the Timberwolves' physicality.
“There’s no game plan for physicality. We have been, in my opinion, one of the more physical teams in the NBA the last half of the year, since mid-January,” Redick said. “It’s who we are. I take Saturday’s game from a physicality standpoint as an aberration.”
The Lakers have the offensive firepower, but their defensive limitations mean they must embrace the physical side of the game. Otherwise, they're an easy target for opposing teams, especially ones that boast an explosive scorer.
At times, Los Angeles appears to be a quality roster. When they put everything together, their performances make it plausible that they're capable of achieving significant success. However, they're also prone to some abject defensive displays. That inconsistency is what will ultimately derail the Lakers this season.
Nevertheless, Los Angeles is capable of beating Minnesota. Luka Doncic has proven to be their kryptonite in recent years, and LeBron James' elite skillset makes him borderline unguardable at times. Redick must be careful, though, because if the Lakers lean too heavily into physicality, they risk picking up injuries.
For now, though, Los Angeles must focus on doing whatever it takes to win Tuesday. Otherwise, they will be 0-2 and heading on the road.
