Big rookie contracts like Ryan's 'disheartening'

NFL Players Association president Kevin Mawae isn't a fan of big rookie contracts.

Dolphins kicker Jay Feely believes over 90 percent of NFL players are unhappy with the salary system right now.

"As a guy who has been in the league for 14 now going on 15 years and being around other veteran guys, for a young guy to get paid that kind of money and never steps foot on an NFL football field, it's a little disheartening to think of," Mawae said. "It makes it tough for a guy who's proven himself to say 'I want that kind of money' when the owners, all they're going to say is, 'Well, you weren't a first-round pick.'

"And I know there is sentiment around the league amongst the players like, 'Let's do something to control these salaries and control these signing bonuses' and things like that, and I know that's something that the owners are talking about and I'm sure that's going to play in to this round of negotiations for this collective bargaining agreement," he said.

Ryan became the second top draft choice to sign when he accepted a six-year, $72 million contract that included $34.75 million in guarantees. Less than a week before the draft, tackle Jake Long signed a five-year, $57.75 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Big rookie contracts like Ryan's 'disheartening'...

There are some good QB's in the NFL not making near that much money. It's just stupid.

Mawae is the #2 guy in the NFLPA, the organization that supports this system of rookie salaries. and fights to keep it whenever the idea of a rookie pay scale is brought up. If it bugs him so much then do something about it, start talking to Upshaw about how the sytem screws older players. See it Upshaw tells you the same thing he tells everyone else, that older players get their money if they prove themselves. Such as who Gene? Just what older player has gotten the same kind of money as Ryan?
Go ahead Mawae, bitch to Gene, see how much he listens to your gripes, you'll get the same treatment Troy Vincent got; shown the door.

aaaaaaahhhhh how sweet that was cowboy!!!!

I never understood why a kid that never played a down in the NFL gets so much money while owners and GM choose to stiff the guys that have made their teams contenders. I'm all for people making money but damn pay the people that have actually mad you money and help you win.

Amen........but I think we're all talking to the hand here. Of course, with no salary cap, there's no telling what these players are going to make if that happens.

Dig it, Gunna. Couldn't have said it better myself. It HAS to be a slap in the face for a few of the QBs out there. I know I feel slapped.

but damn pay the people that have actually made you money and help you win.
and i'll second that AMEN!! that lines perfect gunna!!
fiver, hopefully it won't happen..........hopefully!!

Maybe they jump on it and get it handled before it gets to that point. At least I hope so.
