Brett Favre: The Greatest Quarterback of All-time.

Now that Brett Favre has retired, the argument arises to where he stands on the list of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

Notice that the title of this post does not have a question mark in it, only a period. Favre is the greatest of all time, and I have proof to back it up.

Some argue that Brett Favre is the greatest because of his NFL records in wins, passing touchdowns, passing yards and consecutive starts. These records are the basis of Favre's case as the greatest, but let's dig a little deeper to find out truly why he is better than all his competitors.

Sure, any qb who killed their team in the playoffs for a decade straight is obviously the greatest of all time. Favre's career ended in the most fitting fashion. He played a horrible game costing his team a chance to go to the super bowl and no one acknoledged it.

If I remember correctly he went to two Super Bowls and won one. Read the whole article at samepagesports.com before you make your opinion. And I am going to acknowledge that you don't know how to spell.

yea i agree. he was a qb that actually did choke in the playoffs. some ppl say if a qb has a bad game then he cokes. wrong!!! u have to look at how well the line and rest of the offense did, but favre is a qb that consistently did bad in the playoffs. he also had a terrible td to pic ratio and yes i did read the article. all it did was prove that he had a horrible td to pic ration. the greatest qbs of all time r qb's that did good w/ no weapons and amazing w/ weapons. this would include brady if he didnt cheat but right now it includes ppl like elway

He's certainly the most entertaining QB to ever play the game.

except VICK

Best QB ever = John Elway

ur right, but if mcnabb wins a sb (which will be up to his team since he has been held back by the eagles for years) then he will be the best of all time. elway is just like him, great success even w/o weapons then a sb winner w/ weapons and if mcnabb was not playing a cheating team and t.o. didnt get hurt mcnabb would officially have a ring right now

I can't argue with you on Elway. Man was he tough when he had to be.

I would have to say Favre

yeah, but your a Packers fan :)

did you read the entire article tcbailey24? Or at least the John Elway part?

yes, great article, but you'll never change my mind on this topic

well your a broncos fan, haha

Montana, Elway, Farve - that is the top of the top tier. I'm surprised nobody is pimping Donovan McNabb as the best ever.

Tom Brady is better than Favre as well as Troy Aikman and Johnny Unitas

OMG, there is no way in hell Aikman is better!

Well, Favre never did win here in Dallas, period. I wouldn't say Aikman was better though, even though he's got more SB hardware. Troy did play better in the big games when Dallas was winning in the early 90's.

but theres no way you can say brady is better then favre right now..

Brady has sealed his legacy with 3 Super Bowl wins. He is still fairly young and will be moving up on Favre pretty quick if he keeps going like he is.

i agree with you, but i said... "right now"

how are you forgetting Marino? he is 10 times the QB than farve......How long did favre play for? 100 years....of course he is going to hold the records....dont forget he also holds the records for the most INT's thrown, and also falls short to montana in every record in the playoffs.....he is no where near the best QB ever...he just played forever...and should have retired a long time ago

Yeah I also forgot to mention Marino and Peyton Mannining

He started the same number of years as Marino.

Yeah, sure. He's better than Unitas, Montana, Staubach, Starr, Bradshaw(as much as I hate to say it) He's won as many Super Bowls as Trent Dilfer, why wouldn't he be the best. I think Favre was a great QB, but he gets a pass on all the stupid things he did to cost his team games.

Sorry Montana, Unitas, Elway just to name a few were better than Favre. Don't get me wrong Favre was great, three time mvp but he was not the greatest. He had to many bad games in the playoffs, for example the five ints against the Rams.

Farve is better then A.J FEELEY .

i'm better then aj feeley

no way aj feeley is by far the best of all time

The "best of" any position...will never be agreed upon. It's a never ending debate.

That said...
ya'll should know who I would pick. lmao.

It"s gonna take Mcnabb reaching the bowl and winning it to be put there with Favre because that"ll mean they both been twice and won once,Don"t get it twisted McNabb is still a beast and whether he"s here or somewhere else the man will have a bowl under his belt ..

The problem with any "greatest of all time" arguments that are statistics-based is if the statistics are compared person to person without taking into consideration the eras of the players. For example, in 1976 Ken Stabler led the league in TD passes with 27. Bert Jones had 24. Ken Anderson was next at 19. At first glance, you could say these QBs are not very good based on these paltry TD pass numbers, but all of these QBs were pretty good.

In my opinion, the metric that best captures greatness is winning. For a QB, look at championships and winning percentage. Another metric that might have good utility is game winning drives. What QB has the ball at the end of the game and leads their team to a win? Favre probably rates fairly high here, but the championships aren't there.

I think we had this argument a couple of months ago. If you want to go back and check Montana's numbers and his SB rings, I would have to go with Joe.

I agree.

The reason why Favre has a larger passer rating and percentage is because he stayed in the game longer then his competitors. Obviously since he stayed in longer then Marino and others he is going to have more passes to completions! If he had quit when the aforementioned had quit then you could compare apples to apples. Favre stayed in forever! Past his prime! figure that out and THEN say he is the best. For now I say no.

And, Montana didn't throw any picks in OT that cost his team a trip to the Super Bowl. I love Favre and what he has accomplished. He has great stats and got a lot out of his players, but I can't vote him the best of all time just on stats alone. He was a gunslinger and gambler and it cost him in a lot of games.

exactly, stats don't mean as much as a W

In all deffence to Favre He never had Jerry rice the best wr of all time

Sterling Sharpe is one of the greatest WRs to ever lace them up. His career ended too early, but he played the part of Jerry Rice quite well. He threw to several other pro-bowl receivers - Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks...

If you're trying to compare Sterling Sharpe to Jerry Rice, you're being ridiculous. And Robert Brooks never made a pro bowl, Freeman only made one.

It is strange how fans whose teams don't win SB's and big games always say they never had receivers.

Sterling Sharpe's final 3 seasons (1992-1994): 314 catches, 3844 yards, 42 TDs. In 1995, Robert Brooks caught 102 passes for 1497 yards and 13 TDs. In 1997-98, Antonio Freeman caught 158 passes for 2667 yards and 26 TDs. Donald Driver and Javon Walker weren't bad either.

It is amazing Farve managed to have a career at all with talentless hacks like these.

Good point.

I don't think receivers have much to do with it. My fav receiver of all time on my team wont even make it into the HOF. Deion Branch, everyone thought he was great, then he got traded, and he has done nothing with the seahawks. I think the QB and the recevier have to be great together otherwise it makes no difference how great they are.

to bad he was a TE, great receiver though

It's not like Favre hasn't had great receivers. Sterling Sharpe, as mentioned below, and a host of others have been there.

Whoops, make that mentioned above.

Now we're really going to have to kick you off Yardbarker.

I'd have to vote Unitas, due to the fact that DB's could still do whatever they wanted to the WR's, and O-line couldn't put their hands on the D-line. this made it a lot harder for him.

I would have to rate Montana and Elway as number one. To me, it's very close. Brady is young and now has pro bowl caliber receivers which he didn't have when they won their superbowls. If Brady wins more rings and posts the stats, I think he will go down as one of the best. I'm too young to comment on Unitas or some of the other great quarterbacks of their era. Favre was just to erratic, especially in the playoffs.

I have to go with Montana the Marino.... then farve then elway....Brady will go down as the best Qb in history no doubt in my mind...He has three rings he will Probably retire with at least 5..He is the best qb in foot ball

No, he really isn't. I would say Peyton is way more accurate..If Peyton and Brady had a long bomb contest Peyton would win. Even though W's mean a lot, for me, in the end being a great QB means you can complete those passes like a champ. Brady can do 1 out of 5 and Peyton can do like 4 out of 5.
