EAGLES BLUFFING ON LITO?

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles apparently used the release of the 2008 regular-season schedule as a way to drum up trade interest in veteran cornerback Lito Sheppard.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon, Eagles president Joe Banner addressed Sheppard's status, suggesting that the Eagles might end up keeping Sheppard, after all.

Banner says that there is "significant interest" in Sheppard, but that, as of right now, "the best thing to do is keep him."

"You don't see many 26-year-old Pro Bowl players who there is even a possibility of acquiring," Banner said. "If you look at the history of player trades, you'll see a very short list of players that age, that caliber of player, that kind of character. There is significant interest, but the reason there is interest is because he's a good player, which is a compelling reason, also, to keep him. We'll just have to weigh the options of keeping him or whatever else is available, and in the end [head coach] Andy [Reid] will make a decision as to which he thinks is better."

It was a foregone conclusion (or so we all thought) when the Eagles pounced on Pats cornerback Asante Samuel that Sheppard would be traded. In the weeks before the launch of free agency, the Eagles vehemently denied rumors of a possible trade of Sheppard (who actually is a bit younger than Samuel), presumably in an effort to ensure that their interest in acquiring Samuel would remain concealed, sort of.

We've heard rumblings about some teams offering a second-round pick and the Eagles holding out for a first-rounder. It could be that some team that doesn't get a corner in round one throws a 2009 first-round pick to Philly after the first day of the draft, like the Drew Bledsoe trade from 2002.

Despite the puffing from Banner, there's no way that Sheppard can play for the Eagles in 2008. The cat is out of the bag, and spraying all over the furniture. Sheppard wisely has kept quiet during these efforts to get him traded (which, presumably, will entail a new contract). If it doesn't happen, Sheppard eventually will sound off.

great post. makes a lot of sense ot keep him. I only like one trade scenario I have seen. That was Lito, and 19 to the Bills for 11, and their 2nd. However unlikey that that trade is, it is the only one that makes any sense to me. I say keep him. No team will be able to throw on us all year............

First off!! I think we should trade lito only if we can get a #1 AKA Chad Johnson.. If not then keep him because we most likely won't get a better player then Lito in the draft. If Lito can accept his contract THAT HE SIGNED then our defense would be amazing. I would be so excited to watch them. I don't think the Eagles are bluffing... I think they would keep him. They are just smart to make it known.

Perhaps Chad Johnson should also honor the contract THAT HE SIGNED!

yeah the only way we get rid of lito is if we can get a true #1 wideout, if not we should keep him our D would be sick if we did

I don't really think the interview says a whole lot of anything as far as reading into what they will do. Joe Banner was simply doing what anyone in his situation would do. He never stated either way what he REALLY plans to do. They are going to hold tight until they are offered something worth while. They have a great player in Lito, and are in no rush to move him. They may not move him. And until they do, he is an eagle. But for them to make a move with him prematurly, or before the draft in other words, would be a mistake.
He wants other organizations to see that he is not afraid to keep Lito on the roster, and hopefully force them to offer something substantially more than they would have wanted to.
My prediction is that he will go on draft day, but would certainly like to see him stay.

If the Cowboys get Chad, Anquan or Roy Will, which many have them targeting. We are going to wish we have another pro bowl caliber CB.

if any are availible we should package lito and a second to bring them here, but if not keep lito instead of picks

We need to make a move on offence...We need a number 1 wr..Desperatly, Look for abig move draft weekend.... We Hope

keep litoooooooo, if he gets traded i wont be sad but it would be awesome to keep em, it will rmeind me so much of of the taylor vincent al harris backfield!!

First off profootballtalk.com likes to report things first right?? Well this is hardly a rumor or breaking news. Why would Andy Reid or Banner say anything other than were going into the season with Lito. Number you want to keep the demand and stock for Lito high and also there is a chance that the Eagles get low balled and they feel its better off keeping him(which they wont) but seriously I give props to Lito for keeping quiet during this whole thing. After all the Birds are still his employer, and other teams have to take notice of his aditude during this fiasco which also raises his stock!! Lito wont be an Eagle come Lehigh!

All we can do is close our eyes and dream of what Dawkins,Samuel,Mikell and Lito can do on the same field. And what our D line can do,I bet Master Mind Jimmy smiling so hard he lok like the grinch!

Dude... that doesn't make any sense. If we had a #1.. I don't think any of us would be wishing we had another pro bowler. Yes I would like to have both but that #1 is more important to us right now then Lito.

it does make sense. go back and read it carefully.

My Point is....
If Dallas has TO, Roy Williams, Terry Glenn and Creighton, then the eagles will need as many quality DB's on the field as they can get. and by quality I'm not talking about Hanselio Hanson.

Would I rather have a #1 WR then lito. yes. but if Dallas gets that #1 Wr then I wouldn't mind keeping lito as appose to getting more picks.

and yes, lito can and has returned kicks/punts

Stop telling people they don't make sense until you learn some reading comprehension skills. GBar is asserting the defensive value of keeping Lito Shepperd. He is telling you that we might be in a better position keeping Lito instead of "dumping" him to improve the draft particularly if a divisional opponent aquires a star WR.

and Ebliterate..... You forgot one person. Sheldon Brown. Quinten Mikell would be playing if lito stays . the only time he would is in a 3 receiver set. Sheldon would stick the 3rd receiver and mikell would go to Strong Safety.

steal it & smoke it..........i like the guy, yeah yeah yea, i hear the haters runnin towards me, then again you must admit IDGAF ;0 !!!!

now ck0712 u know seeing lito picking off my boy romo pains me so y u gotta do it LOL

i rather get lucky in the draft and get a stud WR who'll be a star now and keep lito

how many times did the eagles get lucky with a wr in the draft hahah, fredex and mcmullen didnt turn out...and keeping lito would only be keepin one of the corners off the field or covering a 3rd WR and they are all better than that...we gotta trade the guy he wants more money anyway...we'll see though

Yea you right good look ferkid20.Thats even better.

love the rules of the yard

Yes. I too enjoy my computer telling me what to do.

let me ask you this: can lito return punts or kickoffs?

one of the best in the league, but it's to much of a risk. Thats why he has 3 TD's on interceptions.

I would want to keep Lito unless they get a #1 for him.

banner is saying this because he's smart. he doesnt want to make it look like we're dying to get rid of him. hey, if we got a second round pick for lito i'd be happy as hell. We could get chris williams, james hardy and zibokowski all on the same day--BOOM

i definitely think that theyre bluffing because obviously his stock goes up if teams think were gonna hold on to him. obviously most teams wont buy it but hey if it works, it works. lets get it done in the draft. go birds

Do we all still think they are bluffing now, with Chad demanding a trade it puts us as a front runner

Nothing has changed. Most teams have had this situation on their radar and probably have considered prospective offers if/when the Bengals announce they will listen to them. Without knowing what other teams would offer no one is a "front runner" for CJ.

LITO IS OTTA HERE,HE LIKE A LOT OF PLAYERS IN THE EAGLES LOCKER ROOM ARE UN HAPPY WITH THEIR CONTRACT

A) where is this proven to be true? You can assume that because of Asante's contract but it hasn't been demonstrated by anything Lito has said or done that I am aware of.
B) Unhappy...SO WHAT?!?! It is not nor should it be the Eagles responsibility to ensure that all of their draft picks become billionaires. Lito has NO leverage if he remains on this team. He will have to stay calm and do his job as the team sees fit.

I would realisticly give up a number 2 and lito for chad.... If it took our number one maybe even that...The bright side is now they are going to be desperate to dump him...Losing chris henry, and now chad really is a huge hit for the bengals.

Listen to your own words..." they are desperate to dump him..................Losing Chris Henry and now Chad is a huge hit for the Bengals." Assuming the Bengals have written off Johnson and considering they also lost Chris Henry do you think the best option for them will be to trade for a corner???????

I agree with Reds1214. Do what you have to, to get Chad Johnson, even if that means giving Lito Shephard and a #2 and a #4 draft choice. If it means winning the SuperBowl, or a much better chance of winning a SuperBowl, why wouldn't you. After all, the only way our season can be a success is to win the SuperBowl.

When is everyone going to get it. Chad Johnson is not allowed to be contacted by anybody. Cinci owns him as of right now. Although they may make a move in order to remove the distraction, what gives anybody the clue that the eagles are a front-runner. And the front office is certainly not going to consider giving up our top picks along with lito for a guy who is a proven distraction, who needs that. They need to utilize their picks to stabilize their O-line for the coming years. A great receiver is nothing if they cannot protect their quarterback, and with Mcnabb's situation as it is, I think I'd rather see him on his feet, rather than go down for another half of a season.

Although I agree 100% it would make little sense for the Bengals not to entertain offers and they will have to do this very soon. But you are right. There's no reason to suspect that the Eagles will have the best proposal on the table. And I will be disappointed if something isn't done to nullify the problem of age on our o-line.

Teams do things behind each others backs all the time... He has been contacted... Don't you worry about that.. Things can be worked out... without the nfl knowing... Teams do it all the time... That is what cell phones are for.... Don't you worry Ocho has been contacted as well as marvin lewis and the bengals gm... No player is untradeable that is why the no trade clause can be waived.

This may be true but then other teams would do the same thing, correct? It is possible that someone will make a better offer.

That is very true.... We have alot more room under the cap then other teams though... So we will see....
