Elway Surprised Cutler Called Out Brandon Marshall

John Elway understands why Jay Cutler recently called out a troubled teammate, he just wouldn't have taken the same approach.

"I was surprised to hear it actually," the former Broncos quarterback said Wednesday.

Cutler, fed up with all the drama surrounding Brandon Marshall, lashed out at his No. 1 receiver and fellow third-year star, who suffered a gash on his right forearm while messing round last month.

"He's not my favorite person right now," the current Broncos quarterback said of Marshall.

Elway didn't think this particular incident necessitated Cutler's ire.

"Him cutting his arm is not that big of deal to me," Elway said. "Obviously, he was wrestling with his brother. He's still a kid."

Marshall, who emerged as Cutler's primary target in his breakout 2007 season, said he was horsing around with his older brother at a resort in Orlando, Fla., when he fell into a television set, cutting an artery, a vein, a nerve, two tendons and three muscles in his right arm.

It's not the first time Marshall has found himself in the news. He faces a drunken driving charge stemming from an October incident.

Cutler said incidents like Marshall's accident simply can't happen.

"If that's what Jay feels like he needs to comment on, he needs to do that," Elway said. "Personally, I would've done it to him. Even though I tried to settle things in the press, looking back over the years, it hasn't been the right way to do it."

Elway, the CEO of the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush, voiced his comments as he talked about his team's game Friday night with the Cleveland Gladiators, who are co-owned by Bernie Kosar. The two quarterbacks, and their cities, are permanently linked thanks to their postseason battles.

"Bernie was talking about taking me down on the field. I wouldn't feel comfortable unless they threw dog bones," Elway said with a grin.

Elway appreciates Cutler's attempt to become more of a vocal leader.

"As a quarterback, you've got to take a leadership role," Elway said. "Jay has that last year under his belt. I'm sure he feels a lot better where he's going. They need someone to take over. That's a good move on Jay's part.

"Bottom line, there's talk and there's wins," he said.

Elway can't recall when he earned the trust and respect of his teammates. He said it just stemmed from winning games.

"You'll feel them follow you," he said. "There are different ways to lead -- everyone has a different way. Jay will have his own personal way, too. It's just a matter of when you gain the respect of those teammates. That's when leadership comes. They respect what you're doing."

Although the Broncos have missed the playoffs the last two seasons, Elway isn't concerned about the direction of the team.

"I just know having been in that organization for 16 years, they're not trying to get worse," he said. "They're trying to get better."

Well to be honest in a way i agree with what Elway has said........thoughts?

sometimes it is best to keep ones mouth shut and this might be prime example of one of those times

I don't know, it's seems Elway just did the same thing.I think Cutler backed up his statements with some positivity, though. It must be very hard not to have a "weak" moment with the media in your face at all times.Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20.

yeah elway did just do the same thing
i'm relfecting back to donovan i guess and all the times he's had crap in his face and just smiled know what i mean.

Gotcha Marko. But Donovan is in a league of his own.

true dat

We'll he's the leader of the team maybe he's trying to show his coaches and other players he means business.

good call gunna could very well be and i guess sometimes sh*t needs to be said i guess it's a hard call all around.

I like what Cutler did and I like the way he did it. He said what he had to say, but he made sure it ended with a positive note. Marshall needed to be called to the carpet and we know he has been called out behind closed doors before so it seems to me that it was time to try a new tactic. I would like to see this more often. IF the fans are disappionted and decide not to buy jerseys maybe that will get through to these knuckleheads.

If Elway had a receiver with Marshall's talent who was jackassing around like Marshall has he would have called him in the locker room, the media wherever if he thought he needed to.

He did call out Sharp in the media but he said in the article that he thought nowadays that it wasn't the best solution. That said, in the last ten years since he retired the antics have really gotten much worse.

then in turn we could say that someone should call out chad johnson and a whole lotta other WR's as well. i guess it's just a double edged sword ;) !

I don't know about the double edged sword part. I do think Chad's teammates should be telling him to shut up. The fact that they are not makes me wonder what they know that we do not. I just believe that no good comes from sweeping bad behavior under the rug. I think that that is how this mess got so far out of control. It is like telling these prima donnas that their action have no consequences.

I don't know about the double edged sword part

dammed if ya do, dammed if ya don't :) !!!!!!

Cutler is just trying to be a leader and if that's the way he trying to become the leader, its great with me cuz if he becomes the leader he's trying to be, the Broncos will become a great team, and thats what I hope happens

TC u know the bronco's better then anyone, so dig it-i'm glad u r ok with it, i was wondering about this whole deal!!!

I think it's great that Cutler took a stand. He was right. I know I was surprised as well. But I also think it takes him up a couple notches as far as establishing himself the Franchise Guy.

hey docs sports, thanks for the input ;0 !!!
