Favre could return, do the Packers want him?

Brett Favre has contacted the Packers about a possible return. Is this a potential mistake for Green Bay?

I think Favre is ridiculous. It was bad enough that season after season he "contemplated" retirement for months before deciding to keep playing, but this is just stupid. He announced his retirement with the crying and everything else, then decides he might want to come back? Clearly he cares more about himself than that team - I hope the Packers won't take him back. Getting drafted by the Packers was the worst thing that ever happened to Aaron Rodgers.

I think it's more of a case of Favre having a hard time letting go of the game.

An entertaining and thoughtful post, thanks for linking. IMHO, Brett should have had something to move on to: a gig with NFL Network, a foundation to run, starting a charter school in his home town... Something. Was only inevitable that this would occur (if the reports that he's contacted the Packers are indeed true), but had he busied himself with another project or "distraction," he could have maybe "moved on" better and saved himself from this sort of embarassment (no offense intended to Favre, just the word that fits the situation the best).

How do the Packers tactfully say, "Thanks, but..."

Kind of reminds me of the situation with Cowher. He knew that he needed to get away from the game, so he left the Steelers, but he also couldn't get away from the game, so he became a broadcaster. Maybe Favre needs to do the same and take baby steps out of the NFL, rather than taking it all in one big leap.

Cowher is a great example of what I was trying to articulate. Shame someone didn't help Brett think about the baby steps he needed to take to leave the NFL...

Brett is a selfish jackass.

Brett held the Packers hostage with his indescisions before last yr. He never did actually file his retirement papers from the League. I as a football fan would like for him just to pack it up and ride off to the sunset. And have his fans remember the good things he did through his career, but now I think he is gonna start annoying fans ( outside Lambough of course). Doesn't it get to a point to where he is being selfish..........I mean the Packers need to move on , and Arron Rodgers needs to be assured he is now the man at QB for them.
Sorry Brett, it's becoming more about you than anything anymore.

Green Bay needs to tell Brett Favre no thanks and move forward. If they let Favre hold them hostage again then they deserve whatever they get.

They deserve whatever they get?? You mean an amazing QB that after last season has proved he still has maybe two more years in him, let's face the fact.. stick with the devil you know... Rodgers could walk in and need four years before anything even takes effect... Favre comes back into a system he created and the magic is back, let Rodgers eat a little bit more knowledge under the man. Another thing, Brett Favre holding a team "hostage"??? Really ??? We've all seen the F'n heart this guy puts in the game, i.e. Jordan, let it go you guys, if he was holding a team hostage than it was a win win for both parties. Look at the mans stats last year before you blow your crap of hostage holding, it's called love of the game, remember what that was like?? Moss, T.O., Vick ???

Well, the Jordan comparison is perfect. Yes, he did great things for the Bulls, but he didn't exactly lead the Wizards to any titles, did he?

Maybe Favre comes back and performs well next year. Maybe he performs well for two years. I can tell you something that wouldn't happen in those two years: Aaron Rodgers wouldn't get a chance to show what he is capable of, which means the Packers would be sacrificing their future for one to two more chances with Favre.

This is a young team that could compete for years with a decent young quarterback. AJ Hawk and Nick Barnett on defense, Ryan Grant at running back, Donald Driver and Greg Jennings at receiver. Yes, Favre would be able to help the Packers, but it's not like the Packers would be sunk by giving the ball to Rodgers. They've got enough talent to compete, even with a first year starter at QB. Favre may give them the best chance to compete next year, but Rodgers is their best bet long term, and that's what this team is built for.

Okay, untangle yourself from #4's pubic hairs long enough to listen to reason (if you can). For every year that Brett DOESN'T take your team to the Super Bowl, Aaron Rodgers (aka the future) continues to sit on the bench and not get any meaningful game time experience thus not bet any better.... so YES, he has been holding the team hostage and will continue to do so if he comes back. You said it yourself, "Rodgers could walk in and need four years before anything even takes effect." That's exactly my point. Rodgers should have two of those "four years" under his belt already.... see "hostage." No one questions Brett's heart and passion. He's one of the greats. But is it really "love for the game"? Or is it love for the spotlight? Now check one last thing before diving back into Favre's pubes.... Don't EVER compare him to MJ. Chucking up a ball into triple coverage when the game is on the line only to have it intercepted and making a clutch game winning shot (several times over) are two different things.

And also......... this reminds you of Bill F'n Cowher..???? Are we talking about people who have set records in this sport or coaches with lisps!!!!! I'm not a Pack fan but I can't let you guys compare one of the best QB's to a "decent" frickin coach!!!

Hold on a minute...... I just went back and read other statements again "Brett is a selfish jackass"??
Let me introduce you to wikipedia Phil... look this guys stats up "and tell me what his ass tastes like"?

They would take him back in a heart beat....

I think Brett needed a long awaited break, pure and simple. Now that he has had time to kick back and think of things not related to football, he is FINALLY well rested for once. He had a HUGE amount of pressure on him the last few seasons, especially after Holmgren left for Seattle. Although I think that it was bad judgment for McCarthy to play Favre in OT instead of Rodgers during the NFC title game. Brett was uncomfortable and never found the groove in that game, but had an awesome season with the exception of the Bears and Cowboys games. The guy still has what it takes to win, whether with Green Bay or another NFL franchise. Maybe Minnie could work out a deal with the Pack to sign him? If Favre does get released, he won't want to play for another team unless they are a contender...

My thoughts......
IF and I mean IF this is anything more than just another rumor gone mad....I would have no issue with Brett coming back.
The man can still play..and plays well.
Do I think he will? Not really.
Whatever he decides is fine with me, but I think he made his choice. 'nuff said.

I think it is ridiculous to calll him selfish, considering at this point it is nothing but rumor and speculation.
Even so...it would only be selfish if he was a suckass player that wanted to be back , but the fact is he is still a great player. Dear Brett, stop being so selfish..like last year when you returned and took us to the playoffs...

Anyways...Brett rocks. :P
I think he will stay retired.
If not...my Favre jerseys are ready.
