Fbkid's top ten running back tandems

The last few seasons, the two back system has become a very popular trend in the NFL. Teams are noticing that the two back system keeps both backs fresh and avoids them from taking a pounding. Most two back systems have a combination of power and speed. Almost all of the teams on this list have that. So without further explanation, here is my list of the top ten running back tandems in the NFL.

1. Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew Jaguars: Many people wouldn't agree with this but both Taylor and Jones-Drew are among the top 20 backs in the league. Taylor hasn't really gotten much national attention but is one of the most consistent backs in the league. Jones-Drew is a touchdown machine as he has 22 career rushing touchdowns in two years. The two back system has also helped both of them as well as Jones-Drew is learning from one of the best backs in the game while Taylor has added at least 2 years onto his career.

2. Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor Vikings: Many people would have put this tandem at number one on the list. But to me their is more of a drop off from Peterson to Taylor then with the Jaguars tandem. Peterson had an excellent rookie season and if he keeps it up will be one of the best backs in the league for a long time. Taylor also had a solid season with 844 yards and 7 touchdowns. It seems hard to believe but this tandem can be even more effective when the Vikings develop a passing game.

3. LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles Chargers: It's hard to beat a tandem with the best back in the league and a shifty scat back who can score everytime he touches the ball. They may have lost Michael Turner in the offseason, but that won't stop Tomlinson from having a great year as he is always good for at least 14 touchdowns. Sproles also played very well last year and showed he is a good receiver out of the backfield.

4. Marion Barber, Felix Jones Cowboys: This is the perfect example of a thunder and lightning tandem. Barber is one the best brusing backs in the game as he had 10 rushing touchdowns last year. While Jones has great speed and will run all over defenses after Barber has worn them down. This tandem could be much higher next year.

5. Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts Redskins: Portis had another great season last year as he had 1262 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has established himself as one of the best backs in the game. While Betts even though he didn't play that well last season, he is one of the better backups in the league and has the potential to start for some teams.

6. Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw Giants: Considering Jacobs missed 5 games, he had a very good season last year as he averaged 5 yards a carry and had over 1000 yards. The only problem was with his size he should score more then 4 touchdowns. Bradshaw was a great find for the Giants late in the draft last year as he was very elusive and had a big part in the offense during the playoffs.

7. Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden Raiders: This group has the potential to be in the top 4 in this list next year. Fargas had a very good season last year as he had over 1000 yards in 14 games. While McFadden was too good for the Raiders to pass up with the 4th pick. This tandem will really shine once JaMarcus Russell develops but even if the passing game struggles, this duo will be fun to watch.

8. Michael Turner, Jerious Norwood Falcons: This group compliments each other very well as Turner is more of a bruiser while Norwood is among the fastest backs in the league. Both of these guys also have fresh legs as neither of them started last year. Until Matt Ryan develops, these two will be the majority of the Falcons offense.

9. Willis McGahee, Ray Rice Ravens: McGahee had a solid first year in Baltimore with over 1200 yards and 7 touchdowns. Rice was drafted in the second round and due to the fact he is very durable, has the ability to give the Ravens 12-15 carries in his first season. Both of these guys will benefit from having Cam Cameron as offensive coordinator as he loves to utilize his running backs.

10. Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall Steelers: This group could become one of the top tandems in the league if Parker stays healthy and if Mendenhall lives up to the billing of a first round pick. Mendenhall has the ability to become a back who can handle 25 carries a game while Parker is a threat to score everytime he touches the ball. Mike Tomlin will love coming up with ways to get both of these guys on the field at once.

Solid list FB, Chris Henry and Chris Johnson will be on this list in 2 years.

we can only hope

I like both of those guys but they still have LenDale White so we will see what happens. I personally think that Chris Johnson is going to be a stud. Henry I think can become a solid back when he gets the chance.

ya i think people are going to thinking about Chris Johnson and Lendale, less about Chris Henry.

Ok list- Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams? and I think some of these teams have a third back that is better than the two listed or at least equal.

Ronnie is a beast. maybe not this year coming back from the injury, but if he stays healthy he can be top 5 in the league.

I think AP and Chester should be #1. Both are better then Fred. And i also think there is a Giants RB by the name of Derrick that is better then Bradshaw.

dont fool yourself....ahmad bradshaw is perfect to give jacobs a breather...derrick ward brings nothing special to the table..bradshaw brings lighning quickness and brandon is the thunder

Chester Taylor better than Fred Taylor? I doubt Chester, his team or his family would side with you on that one.

At Fred's age? Chester is better. Chester had over 1000 yards the season BEFORE they brought in Hutchinson and Peterson. and the longest run of the year, over 90 yards. Fred's youth is behind him.

Actually the year Taylor ran for over 1000 yards before Peterson was Hutchinson's first year with the team. Taylor is 32 years old and is still one of the most productive backs in the league. Last year he had over 1200 yards. Considering Jones-Drew takes lots of carries away, Taylor's career is going to be even longer and he could even get 12,000 yards for his career which would put him among one of the best backs ever.

my question is: Who names there kid Chester?

exactly

Parker and Mendenhall should be higher, especially if Mendenhall is performs the way i think he will, ( better then McFadden). Alan Faneca probably hurts their totals though.

westbrook and booker??? lethal!!!! where they at?!?!?!!?

i guess if he put up sproles and LT just because of LT, then he would have to put of B-West and Booker. Although i think Buckhalter would be a better choice.

buck is proven booker is still learning only time will tell. i also feel the ravens tandem will not be that good more of a one man show ray rice is alittle over rated imo. ravens will be good this year tho i have that feeling

Now that Cam Cameron is running the offense in Baltimore, I think that both McGahee and Rice will have big seasons.

Dominic Rhodes/Joseph Addai for the colts are back together and the last time they were together the colts won the superbowl.

Rhodes might not even be the number two back though, Mike Hart has a good chance at beating him out in training camp.

well the only time they were together was when they won the superbowl.....so obviously it was the last time yeah

i personally feel that all these rookies should not be included on this list. they have not even played in a preseason game. not trying to bash but that is how i feel. The jag tandem is the best in the league reguardless of age imo

Last year when I did this list I had the same feeling. I didn't include the Vikings tandem for that very reason. That really backfired so I thought it would be a good idea to include some rookies this year. Thanks for the read though and I'm glad you agree on the Jags.

I thought it would be interesting to see how this year's list was to the list I made the year prior. It is very interesting looking back and seeing how much the list has changed. Here is the link, http://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/Top_5_running_back_tandems/17845

westbrook+booker or
westbrook+buckhalter

neither of those two are up there
are you kidding me

i agree man, where the heck are westbrook and booker, thats like one of the best

Buck!

i like the list, but there are definitely more than a few unknown entities out there. i would be more cautious when looking at the raiders and the falcons, but i gotta admit that they are intriguing choices.

fun list, but it's hard to agree with a list with rookies in that that have yet to play

Forgot about Deuce and Reggie??

No Deuce is good when healthy, but Bush had his chance to show everyone what he could do when Deuce was out and didn't perform. Bush is more of a receiver then a running back.

I think REggie will have a breakout year this year. With Deuce back and all. Go saints who dat.

Its gonna be exciting to watch Norwood and Turner. I can't wait!

not a sure thing top ten combo, but like Maroney and Morris for 08'-injured against Dallas week 6, could be a 200 yard attack if Maroney reads better like he did the last part of season...Fargas, no kidding here, his brother dated a co-worker of mine, and his father Huggy bear aka Antonio Fargas is from same area I'm in, in SEast NE...really dig the JAX and PITT combos as well...would love to have a Westbrook/Barber unique back on NE...in my dreams...OAK; if McFadden is the real deal, will really improve the Raiders O...good list for top ten as all these backs mentioned kick butt...yeah, the Saints duo is most intriguing if Duece healthy and Reggie has the right plays set for his talents
