NFL: Rushing for 1,000 Yards Still a Good Measure of Success?

I'm asking the Yard the question, "Is Rushing for 1,000 Yards Still a Good Measure of Success?"

I'm not saying achieving this mark isn't worthy of praise but isn't it time to revisit the mark in a 17 week season?

The NFL Season starts the weekend after Labor Day. Each team plays 16 games during a 17-week period. Since the NFL started there've been countless changes. This article will focus on the number of games played during the regular-season. From 1935 -- 1960 an NFL team played 12 games or less. This didn't change until the 1961 season when the teams played a total 14 games.

This change came about when the American Football League began play. One thing that made the AFL different was its 14-game schedule over a 15-week period, in which each of the eight teams played each of the other teams twice, with one bye week.

The NFL at that time had a fight on its hands; competition from the new league caused them to move to a 14-game season. Today's NFL season consists of 16 games and has been that way since the 1978 season.

your dead on the money no it's not a good measure of success good write up man

i'd have to agree with my bro good blog again

Thanks tommyr

Thanks MarkoD, I'm not saying that it means nothing I just think it is time to raise the bar.

they do need to raise it your righti just read this all over the replies i mean 1200 sounds legit like you said good call

Thanks man

I agree that it isn't but where would you put the mark? I'm thinking 1200 or 1300 would be a similar measuring stick.

Thanks cowboyswin08, my thought was to place the mark at 1,200 yards.

I think it's still impressive - but there have been 238 times someone rushed for 1000 & only 69 rushed for 1333 since the schedule was changed to 16 games.
I think 1200 should be the new benchmark - cause a longer season takes a toll too.

Thanks GSWgirl, I agree it is still impressive and not something to discount but I feel that it is time to raise the bar to 1,200.

When you consider how RBs are used in today's game I think 1000yds is still a pretty good bench mark. Offenses today use screens and short yardage passes to their running backs on what were previously obvious running downs. Perhaps a better evaluation can be assessed from looking at their total yards.

Thanks boogerking, You raise a good point - I can agree with that. Also as stated most teams use a two back system and the carries are shared, the 1,000 is still impressive. Some RB's might not like it but it will keep them fresh in the 4th quarter and prolong their careers.

im there with you on the 1100-1200

good lookin' ejbrown3

Let's try that again. good lookin' wjbrown3!

I think it's impressive but get's no intention Just Like throwing for 3000 yards... Having ten sacks... It get's no attention at all..

I agree that the mark is impressive but I disagree with the statement that the marks listed don't receive attention. All of the above listed accomplishments definitely get attention. All I'm saying is that when the NFL had a 12 game season the mark was a great, it still applied for a 14 game season, now that the league plays a 16 game schedule it is time to raise the bar.

You got it. Just like it's time to move the 3 point line out in basketball and move the rim higher.

I've got no idea what you're talking about. You're in a group by yourself on that one.

I say no. If you break down the 1000 by the old schedule of 14 games, that's 71 yds. a game. If you use that same formula for sixteen games then you come up with 1142 yards. So, why not round it up and say 1200 gets you to good running back status. Just a thought. Now, on the other hand, with the two back systems a lot of teams use, then I guess you have to add them both together. Duh, I'm confused. But, a good running back should be able to crank out 1100-1200 if he's an elite back and worth his salt.

Thanks FIVERINGS, I agree it can be confusing but you're right there: 1100-1200

Thanks. Good post.

Thanks homie I'm like a rookie working to improve
