Patriots Bread and Butter: Wheat-ley and Mayo

To go with the linebacker they drafted at number ten, Jerod Mayo, the Patriots selected Terrence Wheatley (S, Colorado). Wheatley is a quick-twitch athlete that is in the in the same mold as former Patriot Asasnte Samuel -- small, agile, great ballskills and an average tackler. That being said, Wheatley has some durability issues with his wrist, as he has had multiple surgeries. His size and strength will probably relegate him to nickel coverage, at least to start his career.

I think that Wheatley is going to be a great pick in the long run. I am a Sooner fan and got to watch a lot of Big 12 football. This guy is great. Will definitely help take some of the sting out of losing Asante Samuel.

Glad to hear it . I haven't seen alot of him. Pats and Cowboys Fiverings. You know it.

Should be a quality backup/nickel guy at least and 2-3 years in could start.

Yeah.....he may even compete for a starting job. I know he had a great game against a very good passing team, but that may be because of the defensive front of CO. I think he's got great instincts like Samuel, but will take time to develop.

Yep, Asante played nickel for a year and then started to blossom in year two. I'm excited, but I still want to get a Charles Godfrey or Reggie Smith as well.

Reggie is good, but I am a little biased being a Sooner fan. He's a good PR and cover guy. Good luck.

I agree I'm wondering how Charles Godfrey is still available? He's a very versatile player who I think could be a quality starter in the league in a few years. But Wheatley is a great pick. Nobody knows who he is yet but he could be a stud in a few years.

LIttle bit of concern on his on-field speed vs. his workout speed in the combine and some talk about him moving to safety instead of cornerback, but I think he's a good, physical corner who plays the run well. Could be a steal.

It's a shock to me... I've watched him for the last 3 years here in iowa and he is great.

Interestingly enough, the player he most resembles from the Patriots is not Asante Samuel but more like Ellis Hobbs.

At least with the wrist issues right? Wheatleys breaks remind me more of Samuel, but he has alot of Hobbs in him as well... both good (instincts, motor, quickness) and bad (size, durability).

Interesting take, the wrist thing is eery.

Mayo is a really good choice for them. He's fast and smart, Pats fans will be happy with this guy. If he had gone somewhere else he might not be as good as he will be in NE.

Wilfork can has that effect on people.

It makes me sick that my Niners not only gave up a much-needed first round draft pick, but also gave it up to the team I despise, the Patriots

And we thank you for that.

IN BILL WE TRUST. Peoople despised us before Spygate and there's a reason for that. We're an awesome football team that keeps winning and making the right decisions. Moss for a fourth round pick. Welker for a fourth round pick. It's great being us. GO PATS!

Welker cost a 2nd and 7th, but we get your point. Winning brings hate.

Great title.
