Raiders Sign Jeff George...Really

No, this is not 2001: the Oakland Raiders have signed former No. 1 pick Jeff George. The same Jeff George that hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL in five years. The Raiders already have three QBs - starter Aaron Brooks, 2005 3rd rounder and former ASU standout Andrew Walter, and Marques Tuiasosopo, an oft-injured vet who has started some in the past.

The rationale for signing George, particularly this late into the preseason, isn't exactly clear. At the very least, he will have a fair amount of rust to shake off. This, of course, is the team that brought Art Shell back after they fired him from his last coaching gig 12 years ago.

In other news, the Raiders are coming close to terms with Fred Biletnikoff and Kenny Stabler.

I love it. If you're going to stink you might as well stink with a guy who can rifle it to moss. If I were to guess, the Raiders are extremely disappointed with Brooks already and they'd rather not throw Walter into the fire just yet. If the Raiders get off to a terrible start, which they probably will, I wouldn't be surprised to see George start a few games in the middle of the year before handing off the job to Andrew Walter late in the season.

I think shell gets it. if you watch the 1999 vikings season closely, george was able to get the ball fast to moss in double teams. year before, randall cunningham lofted the ball kinda like brooks does now. that is why brooks is ineffective. george is older, can't run anymore - but he never could run, so if his arm is the same, which it is, he will have great success. i just hope the defense is good enough bc i know with geaorge and moss reunited, they will have tons of T.D.'s.

George in my opinion is washed up. It took him 5 years to be out of football and all of a sudden he's back. Give me a break. The best player in basketball Michael Jordan took awhile before he was able to take over each
and every game. The raiders need a coach that's a disciplinarian so that he can get his players and his team
in line.

That would be a good idea to get Walter on the field. I'm from New Orleans and I've seen Brooks stink up the place down. I'm a raider fan and it hurts to see them struggle so bad. I feel like the raiders, packers, 49ers, and the browns will be fighting for the No.1 pick. Oh yeah the 49ers is my other team.

George threw the ball to Moss in Minnesota so they have some chemistry. Moss has already spoken out in favor of Andrew Walter over Aaron Brooks, but Chris Mortenson just noted on ESPN that Walter has some shoulder issues that caused him not to play in the Raiders last preseason game. This signing could signal that those problems are more serious than originally thought.

Are you serious?! How old is Jeff George, like 45! George is over-the-hill, just like Vinny Testaverde and every other retired former NFL QB. The Raiders have some serious issues if they have to turn to a washed up QB who's only talent is the deep ball. Andrew Walter or Marques Tuiasosopo are better suited to play in today's NFL than is George. Aaron Brooks should just retire now if he can't play QB over Jeff George.

I agree. George has been out of football like 5 years and comes back like it's nothing please. Football is not a game that's easy like once you learn you can always do it like riding a bike. You need chemistry, work ethic, reptitions, and more. If Jeff George can play in the NFL, than I can play in the NBA and I'm only 5'8 125 pounds.

I don't get it? Brooks, barring injury is a good fit.
I missed the last game - what happened? I was expecting Walter and Tui to battle it out. Moss picking a QB should not count for much.
George, when he was in Seattle a few years ago, was a good guy back up. No character issues - just an athelete contributing in a back up role, trying to earn a paycheck.

Spaceman, that's a good point. Many of the character issues that people point out with George are far, far in the past. He's been a good backup for a number of teams since his meltdowns in Indianapolis and Atlanta (God, I loved it though when June Jones chewed him out in Atlanta so he bought a hotdog and ate it on the sidelines in front of his coach). Yes, he's old, but he's probably still got a better arm than half of the QB's in the league.

Brooks has been disappointing thus far. Maybe he turns out to be ok, but if he isn't and Walter has shoulder problems than the Raiders only have Tui to turn to who I think they soured on badly after last season.

Now George will always be a backup. He won't be the QB that will lead the raiders to the promise land. They need a lot more pieces to come together. Brooks at QB won't cut it. I'm from New Orleans and I've seen him in action. One day he's all-pro the next he makes all the fans go.

On ESPN yesterday, Mike Ditka said the Raiders should have brought back George Blanda instead.

God bless Ditka. Um....I mean... Ditka bless Ditka.

When a team makes this type of move this close to the season opener you gotta really worry. About half way through this coming season Raider fan might be calling the last two seasons "the good old days".

I seen an interview with George, where he said he's comfortable in just plaiying the role of mentor if he doesn't get the chance to play. Makes you wonder if the Raiders think Walter has already learned all he's going to learn from Brooks and Tui.

But I think this move is just a case of the Raiders trying to insure the QB position. Brooks has struggled in the preseason after coming off that horrid season last year. Tuiasosopo has been injury prone and has a career QB rating of 52.2. And they obviously don't think Walter has developed enough yet. Hopefully Brooks is getting the message to step it up, because with 3 behind him on the depth chart they're not going to be afraid to pull him.
