Top corners: McKelvin, Jenkins, Rodgers-Cromartie, Talib
This year's CB prospects are interesting because there doesn't seem to be a consensus for the #1 guy. You could say that for a lot of positions, actually. The majority of the folks with whom I have spoken put Troy's Leodis McKelvin above the rest, mostly because he can also return punts (and he is more consistent).
A few of the guys whose names haven't been mentioned in my discussions yet are Arizona's Antoine Cason, Oklahoma's Reggie Smith and Virginia Tech's Brandon Flowers. NFL Network's Charles Davis briefly mentioned Flowers this morning in a discussion about USC's Terrell Thomas, and he thinks both of those guys will be solid corners in the league. It was interesting to hear Terrell's name, if only because he has been further down most mocks (but still probably a second-round guy). Here are what some of the scouts and coaches had to offer the Yard. KANSAS CB AQIB TALIB and SOUTH FLORIDA CB MIKE JENKINS: "Both are very talented. Both are also very inconsistent. Talib has character issues so factor that in. He gets points for coming clean, but you kind of knew about the marijuana already anyways because you find out from sources at schools." MIKE JENKINS: "I like him, but you see some questionable ball skills. He's got burst for a big guy. Jenkins is big and he's got talent, but you just don't see it every game." TENNESSEE STATE CB DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE: "What he did in the Senior Bowl pushes him above. He was arguably the top corner skill-wise. He wasn't tested very much at Tennessee State. There are times he didn't look challenged; he looked bored. But there are also games where he made impact plays." TROY CB LEODIS McKELVIN: I think it's going to be McKelvin, first guy (CB) off the board. Cromartie, Talib, Jenkins, those are wild cards. McKelvin is a great kid, and a great returner. Maybe the best corner in the Draft." ALL OF THIS YEAR'S CORNERBACKS: "None of those guys are very good tacklers. Jenkins can be, but he's not there yet." Not wanting to tackle shouldn't be a problem in the NFL. Just ask Deion Sanders. - Dewey PS: You probably watched a ton of Troy football this year, so please excuse me for posting these Leodis McKelvin highlights, but just in case you missed all of those high-profile Troy Trojans games -- Louisiana-Monroe! Middle Tennessee! -- enjoy 'em (and maybe hit the mute button).
