Westbrook wants new deal ... Why not me?

Brian Westbrook has "outplayed" his contract. So, he has fired his agent & is threatening a holdout if he doesn't get a new deal. Doesn't this story smell familiar? Why was TO such an enemy for asking for the same thing? Don't give me that he was only 1 year into his deal, b/c Westbrook is only 3 years into his and TO clearly had a more significant impact than BWest. Don't get me wrong, I love Westbrook & feel he deserves more money... but I felt the same way about 81.

It's OK for the FO to ask veterans to take pay cuts, though.

Tell me why this is ok Eagles fans.

Why not me? Whay is it OK for Westbrook to do this but not me? I got this team to the Super Bowl, and outplayed everyone else on the field during that game with a BROKEN LEG!!
WTF EAGLES FANS!!!!!!!!

are you for real westbrook does deserve his money ,BUT he needs to play out his other contract first the boy is not broke far from it players are getting way to greedy as for t.o. don't get me started donovan ,westbrook and chad lewis got us to the super bowl not t.o. he wasn't even on the field for the playoffs yes he played fairly well in the superbowl but came back way too soon and even in the super bowl he was giving donovan a hard time because constantly wanted the ball and another thing had we would've had chad lewis i think we could have won that game not beacause of t.o. but because of donovan and chad lewis.

I agree with you that the player should honor their contract and play it out since the did sign it and we damn well know that they were happy as hell to sign it at the time. Greed, yeah that is definitely it. I do think that out of all of the players that want a new deal that Westbrook deserves at least a look. He has performed better year after year. In 2008 his cap number will be $4,706,720.
LaDainian Tomlinson of the Chargers is at $7,822,786(DESERVEDLY SO).
Edgerrin James of the Cardinals is at $6,756,240 (WAY OVERRATED).
Ronnie Brown of Dolphins is $6,106,800(GOOD PLAYER COMING BACK FROM KNEE SURGERY).
Lamont Jordan of Raiders is at $6,106,240(SERIOUSLY?!?!)

.. so you can see Westbrook's argument..

yeah i think you are missing my point, which is "why is it ok for Westbrook to ask for more money but it wasn't ok for TO" - both players "outplayed" their contract, so they decide that all of the sudden it's ok to ask for more money. I am not sure i totally disagree w/ their positions, but i also see the other side of the argument. So ulimtately I am just asking - why are we ok w/ Westbrook potentially holding out but we weren't ok w/ it from TO, when TO was just as big a factor as BWest to our team. I'm not saying either should (or should have in TO's case) get new contracts, that's up to the FO to decide. If the FO was smart, they would reward players when it is time to reward them & not when it isnt, but the FO isn't smart so I guess we will see what happens.

Westbrook has come a long way through the organization, T.O. didn't. T.O. had a knack for blasting QBs and blaming things on everyone and everything but himself, Westbrook doesn't. Westbrook deserves his money because he's an unselfish player (see the down on the one play for reference) and now wants the team to show that his unselfishness and hard work is much appreciated.

I didn't miss your point but you missed mine. Westbrook can do this because he is one of the best at his position and isn't being paid like it. TO on the other hand was being paid top dollar and yet wanted more after just 1 season. Westbrook's demand is justified and TO's wasn't.

Now, would have I paid TO to keep him an Eagle?? I certainly would have tried but that's not neither here nor there, just beating a dead horse, time to move on. All that matters is that we take care of Westbrook and keep him an Eagle for the rest of his career and I think that we both can agree on that...

I understand what sure saying but its the way TO did it compared to the way Westbrook did it. TO went public with the whole situation and blasted the team for what you would have to admit was pretty dumb stuff to cry over. example: his 100th touchdown catch not being celebrated. How many teams have you heard of that really do that anyway? Not only that but as far as being a player for the Eagles goes Westbrook has shown more class towards the organization, which is why Westbrook gets a pass

screw t.o. he doesen't deserve a championship with any team i don't care who it is.

I'm going to go ahead and say that Westbrook deserves to be paid because he has outperformed his contract. TO on the other hand, contrary to your opinion did not merit a new deal because he WAS ONLY 1 year into his deal. A 7yr/49 Million dollar contract that put him in the top 5 in terms of money for a WR at the time. Westbrook as stated signed an extension a couple of years back that rewarded him for his efforts and time served with the Eagles. TO was being selfish and wanted more money because he felt that he was deserving. Do I deny that he put up great numbers? No without a doubt he was a force on the field but you shouldn't sign a contract that pays you in the top 5 of your position and not even a year removed from it say that you want a new one and spread a cancer throughout the team. Westy has ground in which to ask for a new deal because at the time he signed his extension he was being paid as per his current status in the NFL at that point in time. He has since become a top flight RB in the NFL. He was underrated then and is still but everyone now knows what he brings to the field on a weekly basis and should be rewarded for it.

I loved TO when he was here that first year but seriously think about what you posted. Just 1 year into a contract and it's time for a new one?!? Makes no sense.. I could see if his deal was a fraction of what he signed for but it wasn't and that is why this is a different situation with Brian. Don't compare the 2 situations because they are both very different and ONLY similar in that it's an Eagles player that wants a new deal. There is a big difference between being 1 year removed and 3 years removed from signing on the dotted line.. get your mind right!

the eagles should of paid TO, but that ship has sailed. They better pay wesbrook...Banner is a cheap bastard!

if west brook leaves our team has absolutely nothing then!!! he deserves to be paid better than edge or ronnie or lamont jordan!!! it's a shame our team is cheap and is not committed to winning!!!

is our team cheap, or are the Cards, Fins, Raiders FO just plain STUPID? These three bums combined don't touch what Westbrook has done for us, but ultiamtely the FO needs to think about where they want to spend their $$, we STILL need a big time WR and they don't want to miss that by overpaying a RB, whether he deserves it or not.

Well I can say that the Cards and Raiders were both desperate and that's why they overpaid. Ronnie Brown was an up and coming player before he tore his knee up this past season. I'm pretty sure that the reason his cap number is so high this year is because he is still playing under his rookie contract.. remember he was a top 5 pick.. so that's the reason for that..

i see a few folks on here think westbrook doesn't deserve a new contract!!! let's see what the team will look like without him!!!!

This is not the same thing, TO was going to be making star money 7 yeasr $49 million a year, to Westbrooks $3 million base this season. TO had played for one year, got his signing bonus and complains, as opposed to the eagles drafting and developing Westbrook, then giving him a mediocre payday, there is loyalty that the eagles fans feel they owe Westbrook. Meanwhile, TO did not get us to the superbowl as he did not play in the playoffs, a place the eagles had been to the previous years and lost in the NFC Championship. Brian Westbrook has long been a game changin and reliable playmaker for this city.

Man! That's a really long sentence. The thing with Westy is if he waits till his contract is up he'll be past his prime and won't get the money he could now! I have no problem with what Brian is doing and is more then deserving a new contract! If he starts doing sit-ups in his driveway my opinion will change but Brian has more sense then that! Lets just face it. Brian and TO are on opposite sides of the class spectrum.

this is the part of the NFL that I hate, yes I know its a buisness and the player has to do what he can to secure a good life for his family, but when this type of situation comes up, a player threatning to hold out for more money when his contract is only half way done. It just sucks the life out of gettn excited about the team. Brian Westbrook is THE best running back in the league and deserves more money. He does deserve to be one of the highest paid at his position. But on the same note he did sign a contract. Westbrook knows that the Eagles are stupid enough not to renegociate a contract when its only half way through its life, which tells me that his days in Philly are numbered. And with that thought, depression sets in. Its hard to support a franchize that time after time, continue to show a hard line stance that ultimately causes a superstar athlete to become dissatisfied and ultimately leave the team. We are seeing this situation playing itself over and over again. If this situation continues escalate to the point that we loose Westbrook. You really have to question the organizations desire to win a championship.

It pains me to say this but if Westbrook leaves because of a money situation. I would have to question my loyalty to the team. I dont think I could route for a franchize that is so calis to its players

u can always change your name to desertcowboyfan LOL...j/k dude...I see what u r saying tho...I know u hate dallas and jerry jones but at least jerry keeps our players happy and thats all u can really ask for...I know philly's FO is stubborn but I think they'll take care of westbrook, don't know about lito tho.

I would rather burn out my eyes with a hot poker

i totally agree that westbrook should get his money but if he wasn't happy with contract he should have not signed it .i love westbrook but the contract he signed stands .they were trying to redo his deal till he fired his agent you don't believe click on to philly.com and read for yourself.

I hope the Eagles are sensable enough to go through with it. But I ask you this. Why would Westbrook fire his agent in the middle of a contrct nego? Because the numbers the Eagles were throwing at him were still to low.
Believ me I hope hes part of the team until he retires. But knowing the history, Westbrook is going to be added to a long list of players that left Philly and found more money and succes elsewere

Desert! Let it play out before you step out! I have no doubt the front office will fix this!

believe me I really hope so. I am proud to be an Eagles fan. I live and die with the Eagles. I live out here in AZ and I wear the team colors every day. Come to think of it I have worn something Eagles for the last 20 some years of my life. I will never step out but Im just sick and tired of seeing the superstars of Philly leave for one reason or another. I am just like every other Eagles fan out there I just want to see a Championship. I want to brag about it.I would try to get a replica superbowl ring. Because if the Eagles win it would be the greatest sports moment of my life. I got all emotional when we won the nfc championship and were going to the superbowl. To just even have the though that the Eagles could screw up this BWest deal makes me just want to throw up. Are the Eagles that arrogant to think that they can be a serious contender with out BWest? If they do they have there heads up their a##

Stickman you got it right. You ask the right question. Had the FO honored TO's request, a righteous request given that TO put his career on the line to win a super bowl playing on a raw injury like that (in addition to his amazing reg season play) we would never had any of that debacle. the Eagles had the chance to treat TO right before he acted like an insecure insane person. Our front office needs to step up to BWest now. BWest took a smaller contract because he settled to be a good get-along guy. Well his production is up and he's a top 10 player in the league now. The FO should have settled this in advance of camp. Things like this make me incredibly frustrated with Banner and Lurie. They're too cheap with the pay and it costs us more seasons to go without a Super Bowl.

I think it's okay for any player to ask for more money if they're outperforming. I think any player should be allowed to switch agents. I also think any team/front office has the right to decide who's get's what and who doesn't. It's all about how you pursue it. The NFL is a group of thousands of men with huge egos, and fatter pockets and they all want top notch respect(Think the LOX featuring DMX...."WHAT'S THE KEY TO LIFE??????.....). T.O. disrespected everyone in his patch to prove his point which wasn't cool(Andy Reid could've handled things better himself too). The difference is T.O threatened to show his face and disrupt team chemistry while Westbrook is basically threatening to not show up and force the Eagles to change the dynamics of their offense being that everything has run through him ground, air and sea for 2-3 years while earning 2nd string money. He also caught a bad rep for the financial department's screw up. He deserves to be rewarded a little extra.

Sounds like Westbrook didn't negotiate a good first deal. Usually the deals are laid out that the backend is so exorbitant, it forces the team to cut him or re-negotiate. Sounds like he agreed to a deal that was cap friendly to the team, his stupid fault.

The Eagles do that to alot of their players. That's why their stars get pissed and front office gets forced to either renegotiate or cut. Unfortunately, it's impossible for players to forecast where their contract stands in the league 2-3 years after they sign it. The agents should know, but even they don't always get it right...

TO had a 7 year 49 million dollar contract with the birds. At the time, 7 million a year was right there with every top flight receiver in the nfl. B West is making half as much as some of the top flight backs in the league. Lamont Jordan makes twice as much as Westbrook does and Westbrook is arguably the second best back in the league.

Westbrook is the most valuable weapon on the Eagle's offense, and he's one of the elite backs in all of football. He deserves more money than what he's getting because without him, the Eagle's lose an entire demension of the offense. He's their leading rusher, and receiver and him sitting out would taint the eagle's chances of even making the playoffs. And didn't the eagles learn from the TO experience what not paying your play maker can do? Ever since TO left, Philly has been looking for a true #1 receiver. That position was a plus on their offense when TO was there, and now its an issue. Do the eagles rally want to do this with runningback too?

I heard on wip this morning that the eagles offered a 15 mil signing bonus but BW said that LT recieved 23 mil 5 years ago and now the going rate should be 30 mil.And that he fired his agent because he didn't agree with BW's terms and thought he was asking way too much.IF this is true, the eagles fo were fair with their offer. This is the side of football I despise.
As far as TO is concerned...I had no problem with him asking for more money, but he and Rosenhaus made a circus out of it. no class.

don't think you know what your talking about. Westbrook has had a far more significant impact than T.O. ever had. T.O. was not present in the playoffs the superbowl year, and yea, westbrook is 3 years in, which is better than only being 1 year into a contract and asking for more money. Might want to proofread your stuff before you submit it.

Proofread? My facts are correct, I do not need to proofread. I do agree that Westbrook's impact has been highly significant, but TO had a more significant impact on the Eagles during the year he was there than any player that comes to mind. I will argue that with you any day - and if you knew what you were talking about, you would know that the Birds did not need TO to walk past Atl and Minn in the playoffs, but he got them there & played better than anyone else in the Super Bowl, and did so with a broken leg.

T.O. gave the team a swagger, one-sided production for WRs, and- believe it or not - leadership when it came to work ethic. The only problem was he gave to much trouble when things didn't go his way. If T.O. came back for the '06 season after McNabb had his hernia season, it would've been an Eagles/Colts Super Bowl. Instead, they tried to please people with Donte Stallworth who was good, but his lack of training camp and a healthy hamstring didn't help matters.

Always love stirring up a good debate.
Does anyone honestly think the Birds will not pay Westbrook? They set a precedent w/ TO, will they follow it through w/ Westbrook? I wish they would have settled it without it hitting the press, but oh well too late. Let's hope it doesn't get ugly! BWest is a TOP 3 RB in the league easily.

ok if i remember right the thing with T.O was not really the contract he just wanted more guaranteed money because he did have that injury so rather then have a contract that if he got hurt and ended his career he wouldnt have any guaranteed money. all the eagles would of had to do was restructur the deal where he would of gotten more guaranteed money. was it wrong the way he did it yes but really you look at what Mcnabb did with him there and the eagles should of gave more guaranteed money......oh well we are glad to have him here in Dallas

he didn't have to play injured'he is the one who begged to play just to say look at me see what i can do he never had the teams interest at heart.as far as the guranteed money HE SIGNED THE DAMN CONTRACT! IF HE DIDN'T LIKE IT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED IT .I AM SO GLAD THAT HE IS IN DALLAS TOO.HE IS WHERE HE BELONGS TO HAVE A STAR ON HIS HELMEMT TO MATCH THE ONE IN HIS FREAKING DEMENTED BRAIN.

and we thank philly for not giving into him b/c your right, he is where he belongs and thats down here in dallas where he wants to be...I just don't understand why philly's FO is so stubborn...I wonder whats the next helmet that westbrook and lito will be wearing????

ahhhhh.......trouble in cheesesteak city. gotta love it.........

Ahhh...a Cowboys fan hiding behind a Texans helmet bc everything he says gets voted down...gotta love it!!!

eagles thank you very much, typical trash coming from a typical cowboys fan'you have no idea what goes on behind the eagles organization worry about your own team and not ours.there's a saying what comes around goes around get it the passion us fans have for our beloved eagles is not to be played with .i know several cowboys fans and all they do is talk smack about their team as well as ours.my step father is the worlds worst but he knows not to talk trash about my eagles.he also will root for the eagles when they aren't playing the boys.so i guess he is not all bad but he talks alot of trash about the cowboys something i have never ever said about my team.go figure i am not saying you are a bad person but please leave our eagles alone they aren't bothering you and neither am i.i do however like jason witten he is freaking awesome.

typical cowboy fan??how ignorant r u...and here is a news flash, u don't know what is going on behind the eagles organization either...u don't work for them so get over yourself...and by the way it was u talking about dallas and how glad u were that we took him...so y don't u take your own advice and don't bother w/anything dallas related cause u apparently don't know s***
