Brian Callahan hire impacts hot topic regarding Titans’ Peter Skoronski
Denny Simmons / The Tennessean-USA TODAY NETWORK

When the Tennessee Titans drafted Northwestern offensive lineman Peter Skoronski with the 11th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, General Manager Ran Carthon was ecstatic.

Skoronski is what Carthon referred to on multiple occasions as a “blue chip” player. Someone he believed would have a significant impact on the Titans’ offensive line regardless of the position he was playing.

It appears newly hired Titans head coach Brian Callahan felt that way too, and Callahan becoming the HC in Tennessee looks like it will have an impact on a hot topic regarding Skoronski’s future.

Skoronski as a guard

Back in April of 2023 leading up to the NFL Draft, Callahan appeared in the Locked On Bengals Podcast to discuss draft prospects. During the interview, Callahan mentioned Skoronski as probably being the best offensive lineman in the draft class. Callahan also said he viewed Skoronski as a guard at the next level.

"It's going to be weird because I think the tackle class is different than the last couple years because there's not the high-end , surefire, Top 10 style tackles in this draft. There just isn't. [There are] good players and guys that are going to play for a long time, but the best lineman is still probably a guard and that's the kid from Northwestern," said Callahan when looking at the crop of offensive linemen entering the NFL Draft. While Callahan was down on the tackles in the class, he was bullish on the interior offensive linemen.

So what does this mean for Skoronski moving forward with the Titans? Given his predraft analysis, it's reasonable to think that Callahan is going to want to stick with Skoronski at left guard in 2023 and beyond.

Moving Skoronski to left tackle has been a hot topic amongst Titans fans ever since he was drafted, and with Tennessee desperately needing to reconstruct their offensive line this offseason, a big part of that is identifying where Skoronski fits. There's no doubt that he's a valuable piece of the puzzle and going to be an impactful offensive lineman for years to come. The question has always been where he plays.

I'd expect the Titans to stick with Skoronski inside and look to address the left tackle situation in either the 2024 NFL Draft or the upcoming free agency period. Tennessee has the 7th overall pick in the draft and the 3rd most projected cap space in the league. Carthon and Callahan will not be short on resources.

This is encouraging to me. This is an example that shows Callahan has an understanding of his personnel and how he wants to use them. It answers a big question about Skoronski's future and allows the Titans to figure out the rest around him.
