Carson Wentz's first game against Eagles went terribly: 'I did not play to my standard'

Sunday was Carson Wentz's first game against former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, and it could not have possibly gone worse for him and the Washington Commanders in a 24-8 loss that was not even as close as the score. 

It was bad. 

For starters, Eagles fans completely took over FedEx Field and turned it what was essentially a home game. There were so many Eagles fans in attendance that their boos of Wentz could be clearly heard early in the game.

Things managed to only get worse from there.

Wentz completed just 25 of 43 passes for 211 yards, with most of those completions and yards coming in late second half garbage time when the game was already all but decided. That is still only 4.9 yards per attempt. At halftime he had completed just three of his first 11 passes while being sacked six times. 

Along with a completely ineffective passing game, Wentz was sacked nine times over the course of the game by an Eagles defense that seemed to take great pride in getting to him. He also fumbled twice, losing one of them.  

After the game Wentz said "I did not play to my standard," while also commenting that there were some surreal moments at the start going against the Eagles. 

Commanders coach Ron Rivera said that Wentz, "could have played better." 

Originally the No. 2 overall pick by the Eagles in 2016 and spent five years with the team before being traded prior to the 2021 season. After one disappointing year with the Indianapolis Colts, he was traded to the Commanders this offseason. He entered play on Sunday with seven touchdown passes (tied for the league lead) through the first two weeks and had showed flashes of the play that made the Eagles (and their fans) believe he could have been a franchise quarterback early in his career. He did not look like that on Sunday. 

The two teams play again in Week 10 on Monday night in Philadelphia. That place is going to be an absolute madhouse.
